🚨 #InternTroubles 🚨
Hey everyone! I need some advice for an awkward situation at my internship 😬. Do you think I screwed up with my boss’s boss? Here’s the lowdown:
– I keep nodding off during meetings 😴
– My boss’s boss seems to not like me 🙁
– I forgot my meeting essentials and nodded off in front of him 😳
I’m worried this might affect my chances of getting a return offer. Any tips on how to make things right and get back in his good graces? Should I talk to him about it? Help a stressed intern out! 🙏#InternshipWorries #OfficeEtiquette #CareerAdvice
Possible solution:
– Show initiative by taking finance classes
– Apologize for any unintentional disrespect
– Speak up about your performance improvements and efforts to stay alert during meetings
You really shouldn’t be nodding off a lot during the day if you’re getting enough sleep. I’d suggest getting a sleep study or exploring if you have medical issues.
As for the internship, you’re probably not getting a return offer. Live and learn.
Your boss, at their age, can tell if you are confident and passionate enough for the job. From what I saw from your post, you need more confidence and passion.
Fellow junior here (well into my analyst stint tho) and I can clearly remember the adjustment period that hit me when I first started full time after graduating. It was exhausting and I too found myself struggling to stay awake, especially after lunch/mid-afternoon. It happened to me and to other analysts in my class. I now see it with my summer analysts.
Is nodding off a great look? No. That said, you aren’t the first and you won’t be the last to do it.
I step away from my desk every so often. Sometimes probably more than I should. It helps me reset though, and sometimes fresh air and just taking your mind off of everything is extremely valuable. Especially if you’re starting to go in circles on something.
Just keep trying to stay awake and engage in conversations when it’s appropriate for you to do so. Ask questions and be a sponge for knowledge. You aren’t expected to be an expert yet.
You’ll also eventually get used to it.
At the end of the day, you’re ahead of a lot of us man. In the end you’ll be ok.
I started my internship a few weeks ago and it’s 8-5 and I find myself nodding off sometimes as well
I have never heard of nodding off in an in person meeting unless someone has a sleeping disorder. As for the ADHD medication, I recommend you maybe try to come off of it if you want to truly find out what’s happening. It may take a week or so for your body to go back to normal.
I will be honest though – that’s pretty disrespectful. Maybe not intentionally, but finance is a very prideful industry. The research component maybe a little less so, but still up there. It’s 9-5, you probably did it everyday for school, it’s not too hard. You most likely get an hour for lunch even if it’s at your desk.
Now, I do see you have an ACL injury, have some potential issues with harmful thoughts, and have had sleep issues since at least May or April. You may get a pass because of the first part. I’m not entirely sure. It doesn’t hurt that you go to Berkeley either. Looking at everything, especially since it’s your first internship (and maybe only since you’re 21?), I would step it up. My first internship I worked usually from 7:45/8 to 6/7. And I had various networking things with coworkers after, so I really had work on my mind until 9/10. You just need to learn to tough it out. When you get home, go to bed. Don’t work, don’t go on TikTok, just eat, maybe do some pushups or sit ups, and go to bed. Outside of work, focus on laundry, eating, and working out and that’s it. Don’t complicate it.
There’s been some jackasses I’ve worked with and known that sucked for the first half and second half of the summer and get offers. Some have done great the whole time and not gotten them. It really just depends on the firm and the division’s needs.
Why would you want the offer? You’re describing your soul leaving the body and yet…
It sound like you are unsure. This is ok. This is also a good time to listen to your gut! The situation you described sounds to me a lot like something that happens to me when I’m dealing with a pushy sales person when I know I’m not buying the widget. I personally believe if the opportunity is right for you then you will be more than excited to be there and it will reflect. Otherwise, you are young and have time to explore. So explore.
First of all check with a doctor about potential sleep apnea or other issues
At this point you’re going to have to crush the internship – go above and beyond on all your assignments. If there’s a way to participate in the meetings or discussion , do so
If there are articles worth sharing, share with the team
There may be a chance to salvage this but you will really need to work hard
I had the same issue when first starting out and still sorta do when I work in the office vs WFH days. The solution for me? No carbs for lunch, so pretty much only salad. And learn to not completely eat till you’re full, which could food coma you.
Once I figured that out, it got better (not perfect though).
If you can survive without coffee in the AM, don’t drink it then. Save the caffeine for when you need it in the afternoon, a bit after lunch.
First off, be more attentive. Try Zyns.
Second, stop overthinking everything. He looked at you for a second.
Nodding off? Don’t expect a return offer
put a pin on a ring, and press it when you find yourself nodding off
Falling alsleep on a meeting and boss catching is 99% no return offer.
Really bad look. I had someone in my junior yr intern class years ago fall asleep repeatedly and they were part of the <10% who didn’t get a return offer.
My advice to you is to #1 show interest and passion throughout the rest of your internship. Work really hard on the things you can control. Go above and beyond, it’s only a couple weeks #2 your mileage may vary here but if your manager or HR is having a debrief with you about the internship subtly swing in a “yeah things have been great though dealing with my narcolepsy has been a bit of a challenge BUT…” you have nothing to lose there
How you get a finance internship w stem background and I can’t get a finance internship w a finance degree.
I used to do this in my finance internship. Years later I was finally diagnosed with a sleep disorder (I also have ADHD but that wasn’t the problem).
See a sleep doctor.
Generally your bosses boss doesn’t say who returns and who doesn’t.
Your boss gets together with your team and all vote on your performance for if you should get a return offer or not. Basically, just focus on your team. Be polite, have a laugh, loosen up, provide good work and I’m sure you will get a return offer.
Doesn’t matter the reason because your boss’ boss will never know. He’ll just remember you dozing off when he was talking.
Hate to say it, but you’re not getting that return offer.
You should finish your internship but you shouldn’t plan for a career there.
My advice for you is to write in paragraphs.

Don’t fall asleep at work. Employers generally don’t like that. So if you want the job, figure it out.
You’re in a bad position to be frank with you, so if I would you I’d already anticipate that you won’t be brought back so that you’re not disappointed.
It’s not an unsalvageable situation though. They’re not going to reject you if they think you’re great just because you nodded off once.
What id do if I were you is ask for a feedback session, one with your manager and another with his. The narrative is just that you want to maximise your opportunity and find areas where you can improve. They may bring this up, which would allow you to explain that’s it’s your new medication that you’re still adjusting to and that the meeting was last minute so you couldn’t make your usual preparations. A reasonable person would understand but don’t bring it up on your own. Otherwise, this will show proactivity and allow you to identify the exact ways you could be better. Ask for very specific feedback.
It’s not the end of the world though. Good luck!
I guess your performance should not be very good becos u mention ur boss’s boss asking you to take more finance classes. So maybe you need to improve ur finance knowledge compare to do networking with boss’s boss.
