π Did you know that the obesity rate among young adult Americans has skyrocketed from 33% in 2009 to a whopping 41% in 2020? π± Let’s dive into this alarming trend, shall we? πββοΈ
πΊTimes have certainly changed! Over the past decade, the prevalence of obesity in young adults has increased by a staggering 8%. That’s like going from a small-sized pizza to an extra-large one! ππ
π’ Wondering who’s bearing the brunt of this rising trend? Well, the youth, aged 18-29, are particularly impacted. Just imagine a group of ten young adults hanging out and four out of ten dealing with obesity-related challenges. π
π Now, let’s take a closer look at the numbers: in 2009, around 33% of young adults were classified as obese. Fast forward to 2020, and that number has spiked to 41%. It’s like our nation’s waistline has gone from “could be better” to “uh-oh!” ππ
πͺ You might be wondering what’s causing this surge in obesity rates among young Americans. Well, our fast-paced lifestyles and sedentary habits have become major culprits. With technology monopolizing our attention, we often find ourselves swapping physical activities for screen time. π± And that’s just the tip of the iceberg lettuce! π₯¬
π Hey, don’t worry, though! It’s never too late to turn things around and adopt a healthier lifestyle. It’s time to kick off those sneakers and get moving! Whether it’s dancing π, hiking ποΈ, or playing a fun sport π, there are plenty of options to keep yourself fit and tip-top in the long run.
Remember, your health is your wealth! Let’s put those statistics in reverse, one step at a time. πποΈββοΈ #HealthyHabits #BeActive #FitForLife

>Obesity in young adult Americans rose from 33% to 41% from 2009 to 2020
… and then COVID hit.
I would love to see the rural vs. urban breakdown on this 41%. In NYC you can walk from The Battery to Harlem and see maybe 2 or 3 obese under-40βs. Then you go to small town Arkansas and there are 20 year olds who look like the people in the chairs from Wall-E.
Damn, and its obesity, not just being a bit overweight. Seems insane. Being not overweight or obesr will be not normal in near future in US
Yay sugar and smart phones/social media
I’m sure it’s gone up between 2020 and 2023, everyone was indoors for months
Chill, experts are sure it wonβt cross 100% anytime soon
Just got a McDonaldβs ad under this article
Outrageous amounts of sugar in everything and normalization of being completely sedentary. It’s not complicated or a mysterious why this is.
I bet it’s gonna keep going up. And random assholes will keep telling me I’m too thin and need to eat a burger.
I saw a prepubescent kid with a massive double chin. Shit just don’t make sense anymore.
I feel like there are less chubby people today vs. when I was growing up. People are either in great shape, or morbidly obese.
Everyone loves to blame sugar and body positivity when we also have: erosion of healthcare access, erosion of public education, car-centric infrastructure that prevents walking, food deserts, lower incident of smoking than Europe and Asia, limited workers rights that leave average people exhausted every day, and no cheap public childcare
I also doubt Covid has reduced those numbers in the following years.
One aspect is this:

If we shortened the fucking work week, people would have more time to take care of their health and mental health, make better dietary choices, take time for exercise, and live in actually healthy communities.
Systemic problems call for systemic solutions.
Getting thinner means losing weight and America never loses!
It blows me away when I got pick up my kids from elementary school just how many of the kids weigh more than I do, a 5β9β adult.
Maybe, just maybe itβs not a moral failing of our youth but rather a failing of our society to protect our food sourceβ¦
Is anyone surprised by this?
Well, here is another fact you can learn today: Obesity in young adult Americans was zero percent (0%) in the mid-nineteen seventies, which is when American corporations really started making and marketing ultra processed “food” products.
Yβall eat like you have free healthcareβ¦.
USA! USA! Weβre going for 100%!
People are so lazy to do any physical activity here, even walking. It boggles my mind because going for a stroll is stress-relieving for me but then you have people fighting to get a parking spot, closest to the entrance, so they donβt have to walk further.
Build suburbs where nobody can walk anywhere safely, let housing prices get to the point where young people have to commute hours every day (so they canβt exercise or cook healthy meals), subsidize agriculture based on industry wants instead of public health so that the cheapest food is the most processed stuffβ¦
β¦gosh why could obesity be going up? It must be a moral failing of all these young adults who gave themselves participation trophies when they were kids.
For comparison, young adults in Sweden have an obesity rate of about 6% for men and just below 3% for women. This is stats from 2021. Kinda crazy how huge the difference is, no pun intended.
However the obesity rates for older people in Sweden is not as flattering, currently at 15% compared to 12% in 2006.
Pandemic + higher rates of being single + increased rates of social isolation + increasingly unnatural food supply = obesity.
Granted I’m a hipster, I was obese before it was cool.
Fortunately the food industry will push for body acceptance.
I’m still waiting for scientists to feed rats microplastics and see if they become fatter ONLY from the introduction of more microplastics in their diets.
Here. I found that researchers are stepping up study of microplastics in animals and humans, but the results are so far few and inconclusive.
But wouldn’t it be something if we discovered that microplastics are increasing chronic inflammation in humans and increasing obesity? Are we killing ourselves for the sake of the oil industry?

“Results: The number of published studies considering the effects of microplastic particles on aquatic organisms is considerable. In aquatic invertebrates, microplastics cause a decline in feeding behavior and fertility, slow down larval growth and development, increase oxygen consumption, and stimulate the production of reactive oxygen species. **In fish, the microplastics may cause structural damage to the intestine, liver, gills, and brain, while affecting metabolic balance, behavior, and fertility; the degree of these harmful effects depends on the particle sizes and doses, as well as the exposure parameters.** The corresponding data for terrestrial mammals are less abundant: **only 30 papers** found in PubMed and Scopus deal with the effects of microplastics in laboratory mice and rats; remarkably, about half of these papers were published in 2021, indicating the growing interest of the scientific community in this issue. The studies demonstrate that in mice and rats microplastics may also cause biochemical and structural damage with noticeable dysfunctions of the intestine, liver, and excretory and reproductive systems.
Conclusions: Microplastics pollute the seas and negatively affect the health of aquatic organisms. The data obtained in laboratory mice and rats suggest a profound negative influence of microplastics on human health. However, given significant variation in plastic types, particle sizes, doses, models, and modes of administration, the available experimental data are still fragmentary and controversial.”
Pretty sure they think it is a medical condition, not due to habits π€£π€£π€£
I just came back from LA (i live in Spain) and was surprised how you have to be carefull when ordering a salad as it can come by default with all sorts of things that transform it from a healthy thing to fast food
Obesity rates here in japan are like 3-5% I think? I got reverse culture shock when I visited america last year!
At least corporate America got rich. The only thing that matters right
41% are obese and I wonder how many are overweight
Who here got obese family members and don’t want to carry the burden of taking care of them when shit hits the fan??? Don’t ever feel guilty and no you’re not selfish.
Look up street scenes from early in the 20th century. The lack of fat people is obvious.
Yeah fuckers are fat as hell here.
It’s all thyroid or medical issues. Absolutely, positively, nothing to do with poor diets and lack of caloric burning movement. /s
