Hey there! So you’re thinking about investing in a billboard for your business, huh? Well, let me tell you something – you don’t need a f***ing billboard. Seriously. In today’s digital age, there are much better ways to get your message out there without breaking the bank on a giant sign by the highway. Let me break it down for you.
## Why Billboards Are a Waste of Money
When it comes to traditional advertising methods like billboards, there are a few key reasons why they might not be the best use of your marketing budget:
1. **Limited Reach**: While billboards may have a high potential reach in terms of foot traffic or car traffic, there’s no guarantee that people will actually see or remember your ad.
2. **High Cost**: Billboards can be incredibly expensive, with prices ranging in the tens of thousands of dollars for just a few weeks of exposure.
3. **Lack of Measurement**: Unlike digital advertising, it’s challenging to track the effectiveness of a billboard campaign and measure ROI accurately.
4. **Changing Consumer Behavior**: With people spending more time on their phones and social media, the attention is shifting away from traditional media like billboards.
## The Power of Social Media and Content Marketing
Instead of pouring your money into a billboard that may or may not get noticed, consider investing in creating compelling content for social media platforms where your audience is already spending their time. Here’s why:
– **Cost-Effective**: Social media advertising is generally more affordable than traditional methods, and you can track performance metrics in real-time.
– **Engagement**: By creating content that resonates with your audience, you can build a loyal following that actively engages with your brand.
– **Opportunity for Virality**: A well-crafted social media post has the potential to go viral and reach a much larger audience than a static billboard.
## Examples of Successful Social Media Campaigns
To give you a better idea of the impact of social media marketing, let’s take a look at a couple of examples:
– **Amstel Light Beer** (Image A): A simple billboard ad that may not leave a lasting impression.
– **Carlsberg** (Image B): A creative billboard idea that sparked social media buzz and generated millions of impressions.
By thinking outside the box and creating content that stands out, you can outsmart your competition without outspending them.
## Conclusion: Be Smart with Your Marketing Budget
In conclusion, while billboards may have their time and place, in today’s digital world, there are more effective and cost-efficient ways to market your business. Focus on creating valuable content for your audience, engaging with them on social media, and building a strong online presence that drives real results.
So, next time you think about investing in a billboard, remember – you don’t need a f***ing billboard. Invest in creativity, authenticity, and strategic content marketing to make a lasting impact on your audience.

>An estimate. There’s no guarantee on the actual number of impressions. There’s (traditionally) no way to measure recall. There’s no way to know you’re not pissing away your money here. And man can it get pissed away.
This can be any modern discussion of any online channel, just as well.
SEO … of an algorithm you haven’t seen … when Google with change that algo over one thousand times in any given year.
Social … where you can have a million friends, yet nobody likes you in the way which produces a sale. Engagement when people are puzzled why nobody will engage with their cash register.
Don’t even get me started with the word “Brand.” I justdonteven.
Billboards? Are you kidding me with that?? These guys are barely ‘ramen profitable’ …that’s without that little flavor-packet-thingy. And you hallucinate any percentage of them are doing ANYTHING offline at all?? Get real.
With all due respect, a well located billboard can be a highly effective form of advertising for a location-based business.
I had one client who increased his average daily customer count by 50 percent.
I have other clients who spend upwards of $30K a year for billboard and they won’t give up the space.
Conversely, this venue is full of posts from small business owners who got hosed by “influencers”, “agencies”, and content guru’s.
I mostly agree with this sentiment, but if billboards were entirely useless there wouldn’t be so many of them. As long as you can measure some kind of positive ROI (not just estimated impressions from the billboard company) then go for it.
I know a car dealership that put a billboard right in front of a carmax saying they’ll buy your car for $500 more than carmax offers. Makes a killing.
Question: voluntary impression in hand like a flyer or water bottle for 2-3 cents per person is good or expensive?
Disagree on this. Billboard can be a good form of location-based marketing. Of course that heavily depends on where billboard is located (plus how effective the copy and image are)
A billboard can definitely be beneficial for certain niches, getting more eyes on your brand is key. If you get enough – your billboards could end up being your infamous signature thing 🤣
I work in advertising and the biggest billboard buyer in my region only buys them so their competitor can’t. Having spoken to both the buyer and their competitor (I create and sell digital ad placements), neither can provide any data as to whether the billboard’s are working. They’ve been blindly doing this for so long it’s not even questioned.
Great post but too much rambling & not required rant against billbaords
Bullshit to make us all poor
