Hey everyone! 👋 Have you ever heard of a situation where an employer is paying way below the minimum wage? 🤔 I recently heard about a friend who is getting paid $9/hour when the minimum wage in their area is $16.55/hour. To make matters worse, her employer is showing fewer hours on her pay stubs than she actually works – she’s working 46 hours per week but only getting paid for, let’s say, 30 hours 🕒💸
So, what can she do in this situation? Here’s where your expertise could really come in handy:
– Advise her to document her actual hours worked 📝
– Encourage her to speak with her employer about the discrepancy in pay 💬
– Research local labor laws and consider filing a formal complaint if necessary 📋
Let’s help each other out and share any tips or advice that could benefit not only my friend but others who may find themselves in a similar position. Knowledge is power! 💪 #KnowledgeIsPower #FairPayForWork
What kind of work does she do? Does she work at a restaurant by chance?
She should line up another job before ratting these guys out.
There’s a legal advice Canada that you’d probably get more accurate answers from.
However fellow Canadian here and she needs to report this to the labour board. Have her get her ducks in a row by having all the proof that she’s worked more than she’s being paid for. The labour board is great to work with in most cases.
If she’s in Canada, she can likely get a free legal consultation by phone (30 minutes). She can google it to find out how. This is a good first step to learn her options.
She should not feel afraid to contact the labour board for her province.
If she’s here as part of the temporary migrant worker program, she may want to reach out to a non profit or legal firm who helps out people in her situation.
But if she’s here as an immigrant: she needs to find a job – even if it’s fewer hours – working for a legitimate company. She won’t make as much money, but at least she won’t be working for free.
I can’t emphasize this enough: if she continues to work excessive hours and not get paid, she won’t be able to have time to find another job, ever. They won’t provide references, and she may not qualify for benefits if they’re not honest employers.
