Hey there! 👋 Are you a recent finance grad wondering how to break into a high-earning finance career? Not sure where your unique background fits in? You’re not alone! Here’s a little context on where I’m at:
– 25M fresh out of a non-target school with a Finance degree 🎓
– GPA of 3.3-3.4, could be better, but I was busy running a software/SaaS company and a brick-and-mortar retail business 🚀
– Limited finance experience beyond school managed investment fund 📊
Feeling a bit lost and regretful about not prioritizing internships and studies earlier? Trust me, you’re not alone! Here are a few suggestions on where you could potentially fit in the finance industry:
– Explore roles in investment banking, private equity, or venture capital given your entrepreneurial background 🌟
– Consider financial analysis or corporate finance roles to leverage your business acumen 💼
– Look into roles in fintech or payment processing industry to capitalize on your tech skills 🖥️
Don’t be discouraged by your lack of traditional finance experience! Your unique background can be a valuable asset in the right role. Keep networking, polishing your resume, and seeking out mentors in the industry. You’ve got this! 💪

At this point would focus on growing your businesses. You found a way to create value in this world instead of suck it off some corporation. Way more upside being your own boss imo.
You have too much talent to waste your life in finance.
Firstly, I like your entrepreneurial spirit. You will have developed a plethora of skills far exceeding a conventional path – and you should leverage those in your next steps.
I can see your dilemma, and the appeal of a steady paycheck when you don’t have much income. But I think the first thing to ask yourself is whether you just want some decent income, or you actually want to pursue a career in finance? They are definitely different things.
If you actually want to pursue a career in finance, I would try to break in at an entry level in a smaller company that will appreciate your proactive approach.
If you want to go down the entrepreneurial path ultimately, then I would consider optimising for the skills you want to develop instead of just finance specifically, and potentially join a smaller company or start-up type vibe. Less steady, but income + developing skills you actually need.
The decision is yours alone and I’m not the person to give advice here.
But
Keep in mind and do some research on things that banks generally permit as Outside Business Activities. If you plan on keeping any of your other work, it would need to be disclosed and approved.
There’s probably no chance a bank would let you work outside of their firm in payment processing
Perhaps consider business school? I think they’d like your background in entrepreneurship and you could pursue a career in startup/ advisory/ VC with your experience. Understand it may be a large financial commitment tho
