#WorkEthics #PayChange #SelfEmployedStruggles
Hey everyone! 👋 Have you ever had your pay structure changed at work, impacting your motivation and attitude towards the job? I recently found myself in that exact situation as a self-employed central heating engineer in England.
Here’s the deal: I was killing it on a big contract at a building site, getting my work done efficiently and ahead of schedule on a price work basis. But then, out of the blue, the company decided to switch me to a day rate, cutting my earnings significantly and demanding longer hours.
So, I decided to change my attitude too. Instead of busting my butt for less money, I started taking more breaks and slowing down my pace deliberately. And surprise, surprise – my productivity took a nosedive.
But here’s where I need your advice and experience: How would you handle a similar situation? Any tips on negotiating with employers or finding a win-win solution?
Possible Solutions:
– Have an open and honest conversation with your employer about your concerns and preferences
– Explore alternative payment structures that work for both parties
– Consider finding new job opportunities if the current situation is untenable

C*nts lot of em
Flogging the willing horse. They will sit around in the office & slap each other on the back for cutting your pay in half. Then when they realise they are getting half of your effort they will sit around in the office with shocked looks on their fat fucking faces.
& they never learn.
i mean its like paying a driver by the mile or by the hour.
pay by the mile and the delivery is fast.
pay by the hour and theyre going to cruise control going 5mph under and take their legal breaks.
your boss is a moron and hopes you will continue to bust your ass making a fraction of the money..theyre even insulting your intelligence by thinking you will continue to be a work horse after fucking your pay over.
also the whole “take the new pay or get fired”..yeah theyve already made a bluff against you and secretly hoped you wouldnt quit, but now that youre slowing down theyre concerned? wtf? them being concerned and actually caring just affirms the suspicion that it was a bluff from them about firing you imo.
if i were in your position i would seek a different job, even a placeholder job, it sounds like youre valuable to them and they are trying to take advantage of it, this opinion is also somewhat proven by how theyre selling 1 home to build 2 more..nothing but greed to fill their own pockets.
yeah i realize theyre the ones with the money and doing the logistics and taking the most risk but when you get greedy and stop paying fairly then they increase the risk of the investment failing..and i garuntee they will have to rush to hire a new person and pay them even more for being so stupid
You might want to double check the rules for contact work vs employee, too. Because here in the usa, if they define what time you are required to work, you’d be classified as an employee.
I thought setting your own price and schedule was a hallmark of being self employed. Are you sure they haven’t made you a disguised employee? Check with HMRC CEST and report the fuckers.
Places seem to totally lose track of the fact that compensation is directly related to productivity. If you start paying me less, I’ll start doing less.
This reminds me of the welder meme that did the rounds
the welding job offer had a very wide pay rate
from $18 – $35 (or something i forget)
A welder came in and did two test welds for them
one was passable but terrible , The 2nd was picture perfect
The empoyer asked what was going on with the difference
and the man easily said
Example one is $18 an hour work
While option 2 is $35 an hour work
You get what you pay for.
“Acting your wage.”
Ask them if the changes puts the role inside the IR-35 rules or not. Watch their heads explode.
“I’m self employed they also made it clear they want a full day out of me and no more leaving at 2/3pm. Well, I thought about it after the meeting and I figured the reason is that paying me £200 a day”
Better check with your tax accountant as you may not legally be considered “self-employed” under the new contract. There’s a clear definition in a lot of states / countries about self-employment and usually the first one is being able to set your own hours, and be able to take on other work. Under their new rules sounds like you’re now a salaried employee.
And I feel you. I was a self-employed sub-contractor as a cable / internet installer a long time ago and only took on as much work as I needed to to live comfortably. Eventually I was let go because I didn’t take on enough work to keep me going 8 – 12 hours a day.
I cannot wait for the follow up post!!
If you do get backlash, I hear there’s a finger (or two, since you’re in England) for that.
I’m curious and want pick your brain a bit. What is your first fix time? I’m an estimator and we typically allow 4 days for a 1 bath house 3 days for a flat. Is first fix heating, domestic and soils, I assume, does it also include lagging?
Keep us updated on what they try to pull
£2,000 versus £1,000. Sure boss man, I work just as hard, /s. That’s a 50% pay cut. You’re right, OP, it’s time to act your wage. 🤷🏼♂️
Good for you dude. They see the value of the work but don’t want to pay for it. The only phrase you ever need for explaining yourself is “you get what you pay for” cause they know damn well what the are doing and the implications of their actions.
I’ll never understand how management people think they can be shitty to laborers, like by forcing a contact change to save themselves money, and they don’t consider that it’ll effect work output
Sounds like they are treating you as an employee and not a contractor.
HMRC may be interested.

I used to work at a union shop. When i first started working there, i was eager to get things done.
I got pulled aside and spoken to about not being a superstar as it makes everyone else look bad and don’t under perform as it makes yourself look bad. I was expected to be in the middle and loosely match everyone else’s output.
That wasn’t a friendly chat but more a warning. I conformed and my output never was the same. I took my 1 hour meal breaks and my 2 20 minute coffee breaks each day but they slowly turned into 2 hour plus meal breaks and 2 45 minute plus coffee breaks. There were other scams that were all had and I actually came to love that job.
Great job! Doit steady and good, if dumb q asked you can answer that quality takes time… And take another tea break 😉
They sound really dumb. I don’t know how people can say the words “do more for less” or something along those lines, and not realize they’re asking to exploit you more to your face.
