Hey there, friend! đ It sounds like youâve been on a rollercoaster ride since graduating in June with your degree in math and computer science. Youâre not alone in feeling the weight of the job hunt; it can be really tough out there.
Letâs break down some of the pain points youâve been facing:
- **Over a 1000 Applications:** Thatâs a staggering number! Applying for jobs can feel like shouting into the void, especially when youâre not getting the responses you deserve.
- **Unpaid Internships and Rejections:** Itâs frustrating to offer your skills and time for free just to gain experience, and still hear “no.” This can really hit hard on your self-esteem.
- **Impact from Personal Loss:** Losing your sister before starting college must have been incredibly tough. Grieving while trying to build a career can create additional stress that makes everything feel more overwhelming.
- **Feeling Unsupported in a Competitive Field:** It’s discouraging when you see others landing positions that feel out of reach. Youâve put in the work, yet the doors keep shutting in your face.
These challenges can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression, especially as they take a toll on your confidence. But letâs shine some light here! đ
Here are a few possible solutions to consider:
- **Networking:** Sometimes it’s not just about applying but connecting with people in the industry. Reach out on LinkedIn to alumni or industry professionals, or attend local meetups.
- **Leverage Skill Projects:** Use your side project as a portfolio piece to showcase your practical skills. This can help you stand out, even among many applications!
- **Seek Support:** Talking to someone about your feelingsâfriends, family, or mental health professionalsâcan provide relief and strategies to cope with your challenges.
Remember, itâs okay to feel this way, and it’s important to process your emotions. Your journey doesnât define your worth or your capabilities. đť

Sorry about your sister.
The sad reality is that this career is a scam unless you got in during the golden age (’09-’21). As an entry-level candidate, you are considered subhuman in the eyes of recruiters.
Thatâs exactly how I feel. Just to let you know that youâre not alone. I have been looking for jobs for several months now and Iâm not even a new grad. I would say itâs tough but keep trying.
At first I blamed the market but I can still see new jobs being posted every day. I now know that the problem is me not having the skills required in this current market. Since youâre young and willing to learn, I would suggest you try to gain any hot skills in your field. Youâll have more chance to be selected.
Just stay hopeful and making yourself relevant.
The suffering is long but your life is forever, Iâd say keep trying as long as youâre willing and able.
Try applying for a masters program, take out loans if you have to and reset the clock, the longer youâre out of school with no exp the harder it will be in my experience although it is not in CS but it might be soon.
Otherwise I made projects from things I learned on udemy and youtube! Is it overwhelming? Yes it can be but what you can do is dedicate two hours a day to learn a new language, framework, etc.
If you can enter a hackathon do it! I wish you the best of luck. Iâm going through this myself and I wish you the best of luck
Just keep trying đ Iâm in the same boat, just graduated in May, Iâve been working on side projects and recently finished my portfolio site.
Maybe try and reach out to some recruiters, Iâve had a lot of luck interviewing at federal contractors.
1000 apps and no interviews for any real companies? At all?
I graduate in May from a T50 and I have several 1st round/phone interviews for F500 compamies lined up after a month — applying in my spare time.
Ive got 4yoe but the experience is mostly worthless. Been looking since March and nothing
DM resume. 1k jobs and no interviews sounds like a problem there
Have you considered help desk to like tier 1 application support at a software shop? It’s how i g9t into technology with tech degree
I get you, graduated with the same degree đ My first job I got through connections. It is probably the only way to get employed now.
