Have you ever wondered what those “DO NOT EAT” silica packets found in your new shoes or electronics are really for? Well, here’s a little tip: don’t throw them away! Instead, put them in the back of your clothes drawers to prevent dampness and keep your clothes smelling fresh. 😊
It might sound like a simple life pro tip, but it can make a huge difference, especially if you live in a humid or damp environment. Here’s how and why silica gel packets can be a game-changer for keeping your clothes and drawers dry and odor-free.
Why Use Silica Gel Packets in Clothes Drawers?
Silica gel packets are filled with silica beads, which have a high affinity for water molecules. This means they can effectively absorb excess moisture in the air, making them perfect for preventing dampness in closed spaces such as clothes drawers. Here are a few reasons why using silica gel packets in clothes drawers can be beneficial:
Prevent Dampness: If you live in a humid climate or have clothes that aren’t used frequently, they can become musty or develop a funky smell due to moisture buildup. Silica gel packets can help prevent this by absorbing excess moisture and keeping the air inside the drawers dry.
Keep Clothes Fresh: Dampness can lead to mold and mildew growth, which can ruin your clothes. By keeping the air dry, silica gel packets help prevent these issues and keep your clothes smelling fresh.
Protect Fabrics: Excess moisture can damage delicate fabrics and cause them to deteriorate over time. By using silica gel packets, you can extend the lifespan of your clothes and prevent them from getting that “funny smelling” odor.
How to Use Silica Gel Packets in Clothes Drawers
Now that you know the benefits of using silica gel packets, you might be wondering how to effectively use them in your clothes drawers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to maximizing their effectiveness:
Step 1: Collect Silica Gel Packets
Save the silica gel packets that come with new shoes, electronics, or other products. Alternatively, you can purchase silica gel packets online or from craft stores.
Step 2: Place in Clothes Drawers
Once you have enough silica gel packets, place them in the back of your clothes drawers. Spread them out evenly to ensure that they can effectively absorb moisture from the entire drawer.
Step 3: Replace Regularly
Over time, the silica gel packets will become saturated with moisture. Make sure to replace them every few months, or when you notice that they no longer feel dry to the touch.
Additional Tips for Using Silica Gel Packets
Aside from using silica gel packets in clothes drawers, there are other creative ways to make the most out of them around your home. Here are some additional tips for using silica gel packets:

Save them in a zip lock bag and stick your phone in the bag if it gets wet.
This will work negligibly well for like 1 day.
I drank water out of my new bottle which had the silica packet and only realised it after 2 days. This was about a year ago but at that time I thought I was going to need a visit to the hospital.
I’ve just been eating them. Those labels can’t tell me what to do.
Now all my clothes smell like beef jerky!
Also, you can “recharge” the absorbent properties of silica by briefly placing the packets in the oven on low or out in the sunlight for the day.
I can not possibly imagine them having any effect on a drawer. Drawers aren’t sealed and are way too big. They would soak up barely anything in a space like that
Bro, just get a dehumidifier
You can buy that and it won’t make your clothes smell like seaweed snacks
I always sprinkle them on my cereal
Those things are made to keep small sealed volumes moisture free. In an open environment they will be expended and useless quickly. If you want to lower humidity in a large/open space you need a dehumidifier.
These were very useful in drying out the documents gaining humidity in my mother’s small, portable safe
Now my undies can smell like beef jerky.
If I put them in my boxers, will it prevent swamp ass?
Good idea. We used to drink a lot of Carnation creamer and my wife saved the tall plastic decanters (with the screw top lid) then she uses those silica packets to keep chips, tea, etc. fresh. She places labels on the outside of the decanters to identify the contents.
They saturate out really fast. I don’t see it lowering the humidity for more than a day or two
Nah, I am not putting the greasy silica packet from my jerky into my nice shirts drawer. Not even the underwear drawer.
like to put them into the open storage pots of coffe, tea, whey, powdered milk, flour, starch. Event powdered table salt, helps alot to avoid crumbling
Ahh yes, to prevent **damp**.
oh great tip, thanks for sharing! Usually I just eat them
They also make for a tasty seasoning, that’s what my ex wife did during our divorce
But do I or do I not eat them?
We get large bags in our products at work, I like to give them to people with gun safes.
OP should get one of those dehumidifiers.
they are also good to put in your camera case with camera!
They work great in the zipper pocket of your suitcase – keeps the suitcase from getting an ale during storage and also clothes from smelling musty when traveling from a humid location.
How much moisture do people think those things can absorb? No way this does anything to a clothes drawer.
They’re almost all fully saturated by the time a consumer gets them anyway.
You can just buy fresh, reusable ones. The one from your Costco-sized bag of bacon bits is probably full. I have a few large ones I keep on the dash of my car. You just microwave them every so often.
They are an aquired taste
Always funny how the folks across the pond use “damp” as a noun.
I put them in a container with my dishwasher tablets, because those things always stick together. It works really well
