Have you ever tackled your first major software development project? Let me share my experience with my very first $20,000 web app project! Here’s a quick rundown of how everything unfolded, from landing the client to building the app, and what transpired afterward. 🚀
- Joining the Community: I jumped into a stock trading community when it was just starting to gain traction, with under 1,000 members. I befriended the Discord owner, and as the community exploded to nearly 50,000 members, I shared my coding skills regularly.
- Gaining Trust: The owner noticed my ability to create bots and agents for various tasks, which helped cement their trust in my technical skills.
- The Project: His team wanted to develop a web app loaded with custom features like charts, watchlists, and scanners tailored for traders. So, my friend and I dived into it from our college dorm for about 1.5 months, using WordPress alongside our HTML, JS, and CSS knowledge.
- Success Story: The web app turned out to be a hit! It not only contributed to growing the community to over 100,000 members but also became a paid service. They managed to convert 1,500 members to a $99 monthly plan, raking in six figures for the business. 🎉
- Financial Outcome: We had originally agreed on $12-15K for our work, but ended up receiving a sweet $20,000 payout! Sure, we didn’t negotiate a retainer or get a cut of their profits, which I regret looking back, but for a first endeavor, I’d say we did pretty well!
What do you think about my experience? Have you tackled a big project where you learned valuable lessons about negotiation or client relationships? I’d love to hear your stories or tips! 💬
Impressive hustle! Equity and retainers next time.
Discuss the importance of proper contract negotiation and pricing for future projects, given the significant revenue the app generated for the client.
I’m a Bot developer too, building bots for crypto investors with nodejs. Let me know if you have any requirement related to crypto, I can help.
Congrats 🎉
Great job, especially for a bunch of college students. What happened to all the free users who didn’t convert, though?
When was this?
That’s pretty solid for a first gig. Hindsight’s always 20/20 on the equity stuff. At least you got some good experience and a nice payout. 👏
Congrats! This is a meaningful win and I’m sure inspiring for bigger projects and more client work!
Wicked. Now you can use this as a case study for someone else. I built x for these people that did xyz and it increased their income by x – I’ll do it for you too! This time maintaining some recurring commission
