#JobSearch #Experience vs. #Qualifications
So, you found the perfect job posting but it requires 10 years of experience and all you have is 6 years. 🤔 How do you navigate this tricky situation without your application being tossed in the trash?
Imagine this – you’re excited about a role that feels tailor-made for you, you’ve got the skills, the passion, but that one little obstacle stands in your way – experience. It’s like seeing your favorite dessert behind a glass window, but the store is closed. 😩
How do you sweet-talk your way into that interview room? 🤔 Do you highlight your accomplishments from the past 6 years and show how they make you a perfect fit for the role? Do you emphasize your willingness to learn and grow in the position? Or do you simply click “apply” and hope for the best?
I’m curious to hear your thoughts and experiences! Have you ever been in a similar situation? How did you handle it? Let’s discuss and share tips on how to ace that application even when you don’t meet all the requirements! 💪🏽🚀

The best you can do is honestly apply and see if they will relax the 10 YOE requirement for a candidate who is otherwise qualified.
Just apply.
Speak to the needs and skills of the job in your resume and LinkedIn profile.
Then keep applying for other jobs.
having a some things on there like volunteer work tend to go over well.
Highlight the depth of your experience that you do have. What major milestone of experience is bestowed after 10 years, and how have you achieved it earlier?
Apply anyway.
I’m a Director of HR. Tell me why I should consider you. If you’re compelling, I’ll do it.
The years of experience are not the end all. *You know* that the people with two years are still going to apply, so we sometimes set the experience level high enough to weed out the lowest of the low.
But you may very well have other characteristics that are attractive for the team. Go for it. 😊
You should be applyihng to even if you have 50% of what they are looking for. It’s a wishlist after all.
Absolutely. It’s a wish list, ideal candidates are hard to find. Just the way you will have to make concessions with whatever opportunity you ultimately choose, the hiring managers aren’t necessarily going to find someone who checks every box. Maybe the specifics of the role or their experience with past employees makes them absolutely certain they need someone with 10+ years of experience, but it definitely seems like something that could be compromised. 6 years is still a significant amount of experience for most roles.
Lie on the app
If your application gets thrown in the trash, you’re no worse off than never having applied at all. So just go for it.
apply anyway.
would phrase your experience as “over half a decade” which is both entirely true and includes key word assoc to the posted job.
in general just lie. job postings are total horse shit. the company probably isn’t even hiring, just trying to skirt the law, while laying people off to hire back people at half their wages
Go for it. What are they gonna do? Nothin unless they like your resume, in which case you’ll get a call.
100% yes.
You just have to show the same aptitude as an idiot who has 10 years.
Literally no difference in people with 6 vs 10. Apply and shoot your shot.
If you don’t apply the answer is always no
I would either take my shot and hope I can talk my way in or lie on my resume
I would just apply. Speak to your skills. They may relax their requirements. I have been told that it may be used to deter some people from applying who aren’t motivated enough.
Job descriptions are wish lists. Apply anyway
That’s a hard one, because the job description was probably crafted for a certain individual… Which isn’t you.
They definitely do not want to train anybody, and there’s a good chance they might want to part ways with you somewhere down the line. Count this as a blessing, after a moment of reflection.
Good candidates that tick all of the boxes are hard to find. It’s a Wishlist, not always an absolute must that you tick all of the boxes.
I can’t remember the last time that I hired someone that ticked every box. Some of my best hires have had no industry experience but were very good candidates with great personalities who could be taught…
Not all hiring managers see it this way, but you’ve got nothing to lose.
Apply and also try and get in touch with the staffing person (if you know the HM in a casual capacity that also can help) to see how hard that 10 years experience requirement is. Worst case is they reject.
Requirements are most often a wishlist than an actual set of requirements. There will be a few items in there they won’t budge on but for the most part they know they aren’t going to get someone that ticks every box. So, tick as many as you can and give it a go.
