Unfortunately, when there are no potential consequences, people will continue to behave badly if that is their natural inclination.
I get the sense that personal integrity is one of your closely held values, and I genuinely admire that. Until you work in an environment that shares this value, you’ll be forced to take the high road and ignore the nonsense while it continues unchecked. It may be time for you to look for a role elsewhere.
I became much more content in my career when I felt I didn’t have to be a fake person. Simply me understanding I am following the correct procedures and being fair with all makes me content.
This doesn’t also mean I am rude and standoffish. I say my hi and hellos, how are you and do show an interest in others, however I also understand the importance of keeping to myself.
People like this will always say these things, regardless if it’s your or the person they’ve known for years. I always think would a secure person be saying these things?
Just make sure you don’t drop your standards of work or emotions to these people. It doesn’t end well.
Your manager is a good safe space as they’ve most likely been in your position before.
