I know someone on that team, and they got on by applying for another job, getting it, doing well, then transfering.
Meta/Google does team matching. This means that you’ll have to pass their entire interview cycle and then hope that the hiring managers for these teams pick you (or they might not even be hiring in the first place). Once you’re inside, you can internally transfer after a year or so if those teams are hiring. But it is a risk, they might not hire for a while so you might be stuck on a team you don’t wanna be on.
Networking is the most important thing if you have a specific team or job in mind. Find people that work for those companies. Look for Managers, other ICs, and recruiters. Without networking, you need luck.
To work at these companies you’ll either apply through their careers page, where you’ll apply for a specific opening, or you’ll be approached online by their recruiters who have some set of open positions they’re recruiting for.
The exception is when they provide a generic posting and wait until after you’ve passed the interviews to start “team matching”.
So I guess the answer to your question is that you first have to get in touch with the recruiter one way or another and then tell them which team you’re interested in. Then you can interview, and if you pass you’ll get to tell them again and it’ll either be an available position or it won’t.
