If you’ve seen Lord of the Rings, you’d know that Gollum eats fish by catching them with his bare hands and taking bites out of it while they’re still alive. But in real life, if you were stuck in the wilderness with either no wood or no clue how to make a fire, could you do this in real life to survive, or would you die from some disease? Does it matter that you’re eating freshly killed fish rather than fish that’s been dead for several hours?
## The Dangers of Eating Raw Fish Like Gollum
In real life, eating raw fish like Gollum can pose significant dangers to your health. Here are some risks to consider:
### 1. Parasitic Infections
Eating raw fish increases the risk of ingesting parasites such as tapeworms and roundworms, which can cause serious health issues.
### 2. Bacterial Contamination
Raw fish may contain harmful bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli, leading to food poisoning and gastrointestinal problems.
### 3. Nutrient Loss
Cooking fish helps break down proteins and makes nutrients more easily digestible. Eating raw fish may result in nutrient loss or deficiencies.
## Practical Solutions for Wilderness Survival
While the temptation to eat raw fish like Gollum may arise in a survival situation, it is crucial to prioritize your health and well-being. Here are some practical solutions to consider:
### 1. Build a Fire
Learning how to build a fire in the wilderness is an essential survival skill. A fire can help cook food, purify water, and keep you warm.
### 2. Forage for Edible Plants
In addition to fish, look for edible plants and fruits in the wilderness. Identifying safe, edible plants can provide you with essential nutrients and prevent hunger.
### 3. Carry Emergency Supplies
Pack a survival kit with essentials such as food rations, a water filtration system, and a multi-tool. These supplies can help you survive in unpredictable situations.
Remember, while Gollum’s survival tactics may work in fiction, it is crucial to prioritize your health and safety in real-life survival scenarios. Avoid eating raw fish and focus on practical solutions for wilderness survival to increase your chances of staying safe and healthy.
Stay safe, stay prepared, and remember that your health is the most important asset in any wilderness survival situation! 🌲🐟💪
So, the next time you find yourself in a survival situation, remember the risks of eating raw fish like Gollum and choose safer alternatives for nourishment. Prioritize your health, stay informed, and equip yourself with the skills and knowledge needed to survive in the wilderness.
Yeah, the length of time the fish is dead matters a LOT.
You can eat raw fish, the Japanese do it enough
But also, Gollum was corrupted by the ring and given unnaturally long life, and decayed into a monster so I don’t think his lifestyle was supposed to be seen as healthy…
You are likely going to get an intestinal parasite.
Most sushi fish is hard frozen to kill parasites before it is used.
You absolutely can eat raw fresh animals in nature, you will just also likely get parasites. If it’s a life and death situation it’s worth it, assuming you can get access to modern medicine again after the survival situation is over.
Gollum was (I think he was called) a River Folk/River Hobbit. Like all mammals accustomed to eating raw food he probably has an intestinal fortitude that gets rid of parasites.
Humans need to roast fish out in the wild if we want to eat it right away.
Juicy little worms and pokesie bones will be in your poops! Filthy Hobbitses.
I know if you are stuck at sea, you can drink fishblood for hydration. The meat is too salty though.
Tom Hanks did it, and he’s OK.
In salt water fish, the main parasite I know of is the anisakis worm, which infects fish and marine mammals. It can’t live in humans, but makes us sick when it tries to.

It is dangerous. Human digestive tracts aren’t equipped to handle parasites found in fish, especially fresh water fish.
You can make it edible by
1. Cooking
2. Smoking
3. Freezing / thawing
4. soaking in acid (Vinegar, citrus juice).
Yes, they have parasites and microbes in them. You have to cook the fish to kill them.
Most ideas we have about food hygiene are based on the standard of large populations doing it regularly. If we all ate raw wild fish (or any meat) Gollum-style then a lot of us would get parasites and some of us would get very sick or die, so it’s classed as dangerous and we’re told not to do it.
One person doing it once, well, you might get seriously ill but you probably won’t. How badly do you want to eat this fish?
Yes
Just eat po-ta-toes instead. You know. Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.
Freshwater fish can carry parasites that can do serious damage to you. This is much less likely in some saltwater fish.
Leon Kennedy does it all through Resident Evil 4 Remake, and he turned out okay.
Does gollum look healthy to you? Bro is on his last leg, but jokes aside no that’s not gonna be a fun time
I do remember eating a fish this way…it was cooked by a fire however. It was a fever dream that happened on a holiday in Japan.
I also was given a watermelon by a random old man that we couldn’t eat because we were camping by the beach and had no tools?
Electric Scootered around the entire island…found a very spooky abandoned hotel with greek statues.
Had a panic attack on a mountain/volcano and had to go down 1000 steps in the dark in flip flops and a bikini and try to find our camp again. Ran into a crazy old lady with like twenty cats following her…in the middle of the night…& ended up at a police station.
Meanwhile our friend had left us behind and jogged around the whole island lost and got back to camp after us. Despite having left the mountain earlier…
Anyway…I was drunk when I had that fish.
As others have said, please cook your fish. Also, don’t forget the thumb rule. If a fish is smaller than your thumb, you can eat it whole. If it’s bigger than your thumb, you should gut it before eating.
Ive had military survival training. And I’ve had to put it to use
It essentially comes down to the bacteria in your guts.
If you catch and kill an otherwise healthy critter and eat a small amount of the flesh raw. You may end up with the runs a little bit. This is because you introduced new bacteria to your microbiome and it is out competing the bacteria currently in your guts.
If you are in a situation where you may need to do this you want to face the sickness while you’re healthy and hydrated. Rather than half starved. Starting before you really want to eat uncooked meat will help you only eat a small amount. Limiting the number of new bacteria in your gut. You want to start out small. Like under 1 oz of meat. You want to eat only the highest quality of meat on the animal. Full muscle trimmed.
Ideally you should start this by eating a vegetarian species of animal. Rather than a predator. Avoid eating omnivores or scavengers. Only eat what you kill. Stay clear of their guts. You can get your micro biome adapted to raw meat. It’s going to be rough at first. Ideally you should get lots of freshwater ready before you have the first raw meat.
