Has anyone else experienced an employer refusing to send an offer letter and instead insisting that you come to their location to start right away? 🤔 I recently applied for a blue-collar job in a different part of the country, and this is exactly what I’m dealing with!
Here’s why this situation is so tricky:
– I have a current job that I need to resign from
– There’s the cost of moving to consider
– I don’t want to risk losing my current job and apartment without a solid offer in hand
Why do you think an employer would do this? What could be the possible reasons behind it? And more importantly, what can I do to protect myself in this situation? 🤷♂️
Possible Solution:
– Express your concerns to the employer: Make it clear that you need the security of an offer letter before making such a big move
– Ask for a written confirmation of their intent to hire you: This could serve as a temporary assurance until a formal offer letter is provided
– Consider seeking legal advice: Especially if you feel like the employer is being evasive or uncooperative
What do you all think? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! 💬 #CareerAdvice #JobSearch #EmploymentIssues
Don’t. You. DARE!!!
This has “SCAM” written all over it.
Scam or something illegal. Don’t go!
If they’re not willing to send you an offer letter is this really a company you want to work for? Something very off about the situation.
I can just see you doing all this work to move out there and when you finally show up they decide they only really want to pay you half what they said they would.
As someone who works in IT, offer letters come from HR. As someone who worked for a transport and warehouse company it was not at all uncommon for managers to skip HR process and have us all find out later.
Even with an offer letter you can still turn up and find no job or a lower wage job, protect your self and apply to professional companies this fly by night firm is pulling a con.
Make sure you didn’t end up in an MLM. because it kind of sounds like one.
I wouldn’t risk it. An offer letter lays out the terms of your employment. Without that, even if there is a job waiting for you, the terms could be changed between now and you being hired. Never put that kind of power over your life into someone else’s hands.
Op everyone thinks this is a scam except you – pull the trigger if you’re gonna do it – just dont blame us when you end up scammed haha
Ask them to pay for a plane ticket out.
Nothing good will come of this, they have literally all the leverage and now the cost of an expensive flight and if your dumb enough, an unemployed, desperate employee to make an ultimatum, low-ball offer to AT BEST. At worst these folks will literally kidnap you and you’ve been talking to criminals the whole time. Don’t underestimate the sophistication of organized crime. Do not quit your current job and don’t go anywhere that feels sketchy/unsafe.
I know that you want this to be a good thing, but it’s just not right. Why wouldn’t they send you an offer letter? It’s standard procedure so there must be a reason they don’t want to do this and it’s not to your benefit.
A legit company, hiring you from another area, does not refuse to give you an official offer letter.
You know this is shady but want to hear it is okay. It is not. They will do one of many things (1) make you a contractor (2) different job (3) different pay, and so on. They don’t want anything in writing so when they change it they will say they never said “X”.
An offer letter could be written faster than their response to your request. It just has (1) Title (2) Pay (3) Location (4) Start Date. It is very simple.
Write it off and move on.
Blue collar jobs don’t usually send offer letters. Look you applied for a job that far away. I have taken jobs n moved out of state. Here’s the thing they don’t hire remotely. You go there they have you fill out paperwork n our you to work. I have had countless companies tell me the same thing. Yeah we will hire you when you get here. I don’t think you know how many people don’t show up. People move all the time n out feelers out for ten different jobs. They will be taking only one job. You applied for a job far away so follow thru. They know people like you don’t get it. They told you you have a job if you come there. They can’t hold your hand while you quit your job n pack n move. They also know that takes a minute.
If you really want to do it, take a week holiday from your current job, don’t quit or pack up and move. Turn up at the new job and see what happens, see if it’s legit or not (and paying what they told you etc). Worse case, you’re out an airfare and a few nights motel charges – but still have a job to go back to.
Op!! why you working so hard to dismiss good advice intended to keep you safe? They must be (fake) offering you some ridiculous compensation..and you know what they say. If it seems too good to be true…
I’ve heard thousands of people in my life and never EVER once have I made them quit their job, give up their flat, and fly four hours on their own dime to come get an offer letter! This is not OK. They’re putting you in a position to be vulnerable and have no choice, but to accept whatever their “offering“.
Scam alert!
I am with everyone, that you should not go.
However, you can make the offer letter and put it all in writing yourself. Just write it all up as an email to clarify the details, and send it asking for confirmation. Something like;
Subject: Confirmation of Job Offer – [Your Name]
Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],
Thank you for extending the offer for the [Job Title] position at [Company Name]. I am excited about the opportunity to join your team.
As discussed, I am confirming the following details:
– Start Date: [Your Start Date]
– Salary: [Your Salary]
Please confirm that these details are correct and let me know if there is any additional information or paperwork required from my side.
Thank you once again, and I look forward to your response.
Best regards,

Are “offer letters” standard in blue collar jobs?
Im just waiting for the next post – guys I’ve been screwed over need advice.
>Why would someone refuse to send an offer letter!?
I could give you the answer but does it matter at this point if you are refusing to accept what others are saying?
No matter how legit the employer and job may be, them not wanting to put your pay in writing spells trouble and allows them to screw you with lower pay. Why risk it?
The only reasons I can think of are 1) it’s a scam, or 2) you’d be paid under the table.
If you think it’s legit and want to go further, I think you have to explain that you need an offer letter to proceed, full stop.
You’re essentially asking us if this seems legit, we’re telling you something’s off & to steer clear. A reputable employer would have already made the offer letter available to you online through their employee/HR portal. You’d be taking a very big risk for what seems to be either a scam or a very poorly run company. Think long & hard about going all in on this.
Depending on the job and company, they don’t do offer letters, which sends a bad message in my opinion. By any chance does this employer communicate with your by email, so things can be in writing and leaves a paper trial?
I’ve had this happen to me once, the hr manager refused to put in anything in writing and told me to “Come on down” like the price is right, than tries to guilt me into coming asap by saying things like, “Don’t you feel excited?!” WTF?
From now on, every thing is in writing or no go.
OP in the comments is killing me lmao. Dude thinks he’s too smart to be scammed, but is literally falling for an obvious scam right now.
Are they paying for the flights/drive?
Why are you considering taking a job that pays less and is different than what you applied to?
What industry acts like this?
Smell super shady. Don’t go but if you insist, let us know the update so I can learn more.
Everyone saying scam must be people with office work experience. I’ve never known of a blue collar labor job that wants to hire someone sight unseen. They’ll want to see that you look physically capable to do the duties outlined for the job. They’ll want to see that you’re not actively tweaking. Labor work is different than the typical “offer letter” job that most think of when they hear that phrase.
This has vibes of India scammer all over it
This scenario sounds somewhat familiar….

SCAM. Or worse, indentured servitude. Avoid employers who do not provide offer letters with precise details on compensation, expense coverage, and benefits.
I understand that contracting companies tend to be a lot less professional when it comes to offer letters and formalities. My dad and all my uncles were/are contractors. My fiance was a contractor who was friends with other contractors. It’s a very people based industry with under the table work and the expectation that a person’s word is stronger than any contract you could sign. However, the fact that they’re not willing to send you an offer letter, something that can be written up and sent in like, 10 minutes (or even less using AI) is ridiculous. Do they know that you’re a 4 hour flight away? And they see no issue with asking you to pick it up? I can only assume they think you’re right around the block if they think someone looking for low paying contract work can afford to just do that. I see no reason why they can’t just email it to you. Plenty of people have stated the obvious risk. But you don’t seem to want to hear it. You said you’re just playing the game. My friend, you’re playing the wrong damn game if you think this is okay. If you keep bending over backwardsfor shitty companies that treat you like shit before you even start working there, you will always be at a shitty company. No matter where you go. Have some self respect. 8 hour round trip and giving up your housing to work in a new place with no connections, no housing, no relocation assistance, AND no written confirmation? Come on now.
I would take a week or two off from the current employer and check this out. If it turns out everything that you had imagined, you can take unpaid time off and join back later.
They’re feeling out how flaky/dumb you are. Some entry level jobs are not that professional with letters, etc. but unless you’re Superman or accepting a low-paying job, why would they choose you over local?
That’s called a scam
When I worked blue-collar, there was never an offer letter involved. I wouldn’t say it’s unusual. More likely, they aren’t set up to send out offer letters.
However, the distance does cause concern.
Well, good luck. It appears everyone is telling you they’ve been scammed like this before or are aware it’s a scam based on their friend or family members experience and you are ignoring them.
Not sure why you came to a huge message board for advise only to ignore it.
“Why would someone refuse to send an offer letter?”
Because it’s a scam. Or the job doesn’t exist anymore. Or they are super disorganized and the job isn’t something you should give up everything for and trust them on.
No letter, no resignation. It’s simple as that.
Depends on the industry. I work blue collar (maritime) and have only gotten an offer letter once. But it’s union work, and they at least provide the contract.
