Hey everyone, I could really use some advice and support right now. 😔 My grandpa passed away unexpectedly and I’m struggling to deal with the grief. I asked my company if I could work from home for the rest of the week, but they said no. 😡
Here’s the thing:
– We used to have the flexibility to work from home before the recent office policy change
– I’ve successfully worked remotely in the past
– I want to be productive, but I also need time to grieve
Any suggestions on how to handle this situation? Should I push back or try to find a compromise? Your input would be greatly appreciated. 🙏
Possible solutions:
– Have a heart-to-heart conversation with your manager about your current emotional state and need for flexibility
– Point out your track record of successfully working from home in the past
– Offer to communicate frequently and ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner to ease their concerns

Ask HR about bereavement policies. You may be entitled to it
Typically immediate family, most companies will grant 3 days, if not more. Verify with HR… oh, and make sure you specify that those days are your “in office” days you’re taking off… just to rub it in.

1 day for grandparents where I’m at. Not considered immediate family. They were “kind enough” to let me use vacation days also
Agree with everyone else to check if your company has a bereavement policy.
Just know that often this would mean you would only cover you to be off work. It would likely not cover WFH. This is probably why the company advised you on following standard policy.
ah yes make everyone in there uncomfortable but also visit the bosses office multiple times to tell tales of your grandfather, grief has a way of making people very unproductive.

Check your bereavement leave policy to see how many days you can take off and just take them off. Companies will often give you at least three days off.
