Do you guys find it annoying when people simply say “Hello” to start a chat and then say absolutely nothing until you respond? Why didn’t you address your concerns right away after saying “Hello” instead of waiting several hours for me to respond?
We’ve all been there. You receive a message from someone, they say “Hello” and then… crickets. 🦗 You’re left wondering why they bothered to initiate a conversation if they had nothing to say. It’s frustrating, confusing, and can leave you feeling ignored or unimportant. But fear not, we have some practical solutions to help you navigate these awkward interactions and maintain your sanity in the digital world.
Why do people do this?
It’s easy to jump to conclusions and assume that the other person is rude or simply doesn’t care about your time. However, there could be a myriad of reasons why someone starts a chat with a simple “Hello” and then goes silent. Some possible explanations include:
– They may be distracted or busy with something else
– They could be unsure of how to continue the conversation
– They might be waiting for you to show interest before opening up
– It’s possible they are experiencing technical issues or connection problems
How to handle the situation
1. **Set expectations**: If you find yourself in this situation frequently, consider setting expectations with the other person. Let them know that you prefer direct communication and value prompt responses.
2. **Ask questions**: Instead of waiting for the other person to make the next move, take charge of the conversation by asking engaging questions. This can help break the silence and keep the interaction flowing.
3. **Express your feelings**: If you feel frustrated or ignored, don’t hesitate to express your feelings in a polite and constructive manner. Communication is key in any relationship, whether online or offline.
4. **Give them the benefit of the doubt**: Remember that everyone has their own reasons for their behavior. Give the other person the benefit of the doubt before jumping to conclusions.
5. **Be patient**: Sometimes, people need a little time to gather their thoughts or respond. Practice patience and understanding in these situations.
Don’t let the silence of a “Hello” message get the best of you. By implementing these strategies, you can navigate through these awkward interactions with confidence and grace. Remember, communication is a two-way street, so don’t be afraid to speak up and express your concerns. 🗣️ #communicationiskey

yeah, thats why i dont respond to people who just send hello
I hate when people do that to me on Teams. Don’t ping me with “hello.” Tell me what you want
no point in detailing everything if one doesnt know they’ll respond or when
Yes it’s obnoxious
Hello..
yeah it’s really annoying. I think some people perceive it as rude to immediately jump into the reason they are contacting you.
It irks me a little. They reached out to me for a reason, but won’t tell me what it is? It’s like when a small child says “I know a secret, but I won’t tell you.” It’s non-communication of non-information. A mind game.
This is a super modern interpretation of chat.
Old school interpretation of chat is it is a really time conversation.
An old guy at work sends ‘Hi.’ and waits for you to responds. It’s very off putting for some reason.
My huge pet peeve (an extension of this) is when people hit you with the “Hello” + the wait for you to respond and THEN proceed to ask how things are and what I got up to at the weekend when I know they’ve messaged me for help/advice.
Just say hello and sodding ask me what you want to ask. Wasting more of time with pointless crap just annoys me.My girlfriend does it sometimes “Can I ask you a question?” or “Can you help me?” just ask fgs…
Me too. I hate when I am studying and a message pings me with hello. Man just tell me straightaway what do you want from me. I still wait for sometime before responding in hope ki shayad bata de kya kaam h
Reason why I put this on my bio
https://nohello.net/en/
I assume it is a spam account. They usually open with hello because it’s the one thing spam blockers don’t block
You should probably add attn:nohello or similar to your tagline or status. You can also make an internal wiki instead of linking the website so it shows up on intranet searches, that can help raise awareness of nohello internally.
Super annoying.
Yes drives me nuts. I’ve recently put nohello.net into my status to try combat it
i’m tryna be nice
Yup – adding https://no hello.net/en/ as my status has reduced this significantly at work. I will literally just ignore the message until the other person has actually provided some form of information about what they want/why they’re contacting me.
It’s a trap. When you respond “hi” they will respond “call?” – the stuff of nightmares
My little brother just texts my name and waits for me to respond. I never know how to so I just say his name back lol
I immediately send them this:
Eh. Just bounce back with “Hello” of your own. Communication request recieved. Communication line open.
I even more hate those who start with hello and then they write what they want in a hundred separate messages neither of which is a full sentence. Smth like:
-Hello
(15 seconds)
-Do you
(25 seconds)
-know the solution
(10 seconds)
-for the issue
(…)
and so on and so forth…
At this moment I just tend to wait for at least 15 minutes before I start responding to this crap, so they eventually type everything they wanted.
I don’t respond. We’ve got a lot of (Indian) colleagues, and they do this and it’s infuriating.
You want something? Ask me. Don’t ask to ask, just ask. I’ll respond with an answer or I’ll let you know I’m unavailable right now, but for the love of god, don’t waste my time and your time. You can say Hi and what you need in the same message
“Can I ask a question?” annoys me like no other these days. Just ask… there’s no need for permission. However, it’s often something stupid or something that’s none of their business anyway.
I hate it. Just tell me what you want. I usually message people like this: “Hello! Would you please (insert task). Thank you!” That way I’m not being rude and it gets straight to the point of what I need.
Or leaves a voicemail on your phone, only saying, “This is really important! Call me back ASAP!” 🤦♂️
