🚨#WorkConflict #ProfessionalEtiquette #CollaborationIssues
Hey there, fellow professionals! 👋 Have you ever been in a situation where a coworker refuses to work with you and insists on going through your manager instead? 🤔 Let me share a recent experience I had with a coworker, let’s call him Jack.
– Jack, who is more senior in the Legal department, has been quite challenging to work with lately. 🤨
– Despite addressing concerns maturely, Jack continued to exhibit uncooperative behavior. 😒
– My manager intervened, but the issue still persists. 🤷♂️
So, here’s where I need your advice:
– Who should I approach next: Jack’s manager, my manager, HR, or all of the above? 🤔
– How can I convey the seriousness of the situation effectively? 💬
– Any tips on finding a resolution that benefits both parties? 🤝
Personally, I believe open communication and setting clear boundaries are crucial in such situations. 🗣️ Let’s brainstorm together and find a constructive way forward! 💡 #ProfessionalGrowth #WorkplaceHarmony
Don’t talk to his manager directly.
Document everything going forward. When you need to ask him for something do it in email, cc: your manager and clearly indicate what you want from him (review, action, etc), and when you need it. Follow up reminders as needed. If he doesn’t respond to you have a paper trail. Go through your manager who seems to support you when you need to. Ultimately this is your manager’s responsibility to sort out, but show that you did your best to clearly ask what you wanted, when, and any follow-up messages.
Jack’s either intimidated by you or is sexist if you’re a woman, or both. Probably not sound advice but I’d corner him and ask what his problem is. I’ve done this before and the person turned into an absolute melt.
Always deal with the likes of Jack in writing, such as email. Respond to anything he says politely, but neutrally, and thank him for his input. The politer you are, the worse his behaviour will appear.
You have your manager’s backing, that should help.
Jack sounds like a dick, to be honest.
Did Jack know you were recording the 1:1? If not, I completely understand his not wanting to work directly with you. You can’t be trusted.
Edit to add-dude sounds like a douche. Just responding to the fact he won’t work with you.
You have a one-on-one meeting with a colleague to iron out differences. You then record the meeting without his knowledge. You then send the recording to his boss.
And you are wondering why he doesn’t want to work with you?
If you have a meeting to iron out differences, then you iron out the differences and you agree to disagree. And you keep that conversation confidential unless there is racism or sexual harassment involved.
You violated all trust. I wouldn’t want to work with you either. Not unless I had cameras or three other people in the room at the same time.
Let the downvotes begin.
Sounds like your manager’s problem.
In a nutshell “Jack” is creating a hostile work environment. Additionally it sounds as though his actions… or lack thereof, are hindering the team’s progress and efficiency.
Guys trash
Treat him accordingly and record everything.
He will shoot himself in the foot, or you can present the evidence and file a serious complaint
My experience is that dictors, lawyers, and engineers are some if the biggest assholes with egos that know no limits.
DO NOT let him intimidate you or make you feel any less of a person or team member. Do your job, communicate with him as you should. If he doesn’t respond in a timely fashion, escalate theough yiur boss or his. You have a job to do and he has no authority over tou. Don’t worry about being his friend/coworker as he has made it clear that will never happen. And cover your ass at all times. Cooy yours and his boss’s in communication to show that you have been timely, doing your job, and that it is him who is not doing his job
Stay strong a be proud.
I don’t have anything to add except, fuck Jack
You just have to outlive Jack.
Management is not supporting him and in essence sounds like, will be…fixing the glitch.
Is Jacks last name Off?
You recorded a private 1:1 and then tattled- not a good look from my perspective – now if your work is dependent on him he’s gonna fuck you every chance he got – I know if I were Jack I would throw you under the bus first chance I got
Include his manager on everything.
Source: I have worked with attorneys and some of them have a god complex. They will be hateful, condescending, and arrogant unless their boss is included in every email. You guys can call it whatever you want, that your department decided to go for more open communication, etc.
You complain to your boss that Jack is unresponsive, interfering with your ability to do your job, useless to you, and that you want a competent attorney to work with or want to pay someone outside the company.
Any time you send a contract for review or request something done by Jack you copy your manager.
Any time you miss a deadline or otherwise are impacted, you send an e-mail to both Jack and your manager explaining what happened in detail.
If everything needs to go up 5 levels and then down 4 nothing will ever get done. Seems to me Jack just needs to feel important, and considers dealing with peons to be beneath him.
>My manager said to do so directly with the team, but to make no noise in public messaging channels.
You have your manager’s support. Just keep following their lead on this, and allow them to escalate when they get tired of it.
Don’t ask anything of him if you can help it. Make all those requests go through your manager. They will get tired and bring in Jack’s manager (who also seemed reasonable) soon enough.
Let that battle get fought above you.
