Hey everyone 👋 So, I just got hit with some tough news today – I got laid off with only 1 year of experience under my belt. It’s a brutal reminder that no job is ever truly secure. But hey, we live and we learn, right?
Here are some things to consider for all you new grads out there:
– Assess your risk before making a big move for a job
– Think about choosing a safe job closer to home
– Don’t underestimate the power of networking 💼
I know it’s rough out there, but we’re all in this together. Keep your head up and keep pushing forward! 💪 #StayStrong
Move back in w parents
Get certs
Get a remote job
Grind it out
If parents aren’t an option just remote job in a nowhere state with dirt cheap rent
Sorry to hear that my brother. I work in the IT industry and got laid of several years ago. The job was suppose to be a ‘more permanent’ type of job. No severance package was offered so had to figure out how to support my family. Thanks to God, I immediately found a job that actually paid a bit more. Hopefully you’ll get back in your feet soon my brother.
> Choose your safe job close to home
No jobs exist close to my home, perks of being from a rural area :’)
Just know that shit happens. You got unlucky. Layoffs are something entirely out of your control, they can happen to anyone. It’s unfortunate it happened to you after only 1 YOE but you’ll be fine in the long run.
Relocating for your first job is extremely common, so I don’t know if the message to take away from this is to choose a job close to your home town… but yes, there’s inherent risk in moving.
If the job search doesn’t treat you well locally, you may have to consider moving again to wherever you can get another job lined up. But the Midwest is usually starved for talent, so you might not struggle that much finding another job if you’re open to hybrid/onsite.
Good luck!
> Choose your safe job close to home than move across the country.
Or move to somewhere with more jobs. You moved away from the jobs to work for a specific company
First time and it won’t be your last time.
It takes at least one week to sink in.
Join /layoffs to whine and moan for few days
Get ready to apply for jobs and leetcoding
I think this is going to be the reality for tech for at least the next 5 years. Nobody will be safe so we all need to adopt the mindset that its quite possible that we’ll laid off this year.
There’s nothing wrong with moving, while you are young and new to profession, it a good thing to explore different areas. It’s obviously wrong if you get into the sentiment of job security and bought something really really expensive, then layoff hits.
You’re way better off getting laid off with 1 YoE than getting nothing.
We assign tons of value to our job, but jobs are also a means to an end.
There’s no wrong age to reassessing your priorities. If the safer option is to take a menial job while holding on to roots that may provide some financial stability then there shouldn’t be shame in that.
Sorry OP. But I think for any new grad, it’s worth the risk to gain that experience even if u have to move. Key is to have an emergency fund. You have your whole life to work, you’ll be back.
Now move to Houston where sane people are. NOT Austin.
Sorry to hear that, I have friends in similar situations.
Hey what part of the Midwest? My company is hiring in Chicago and Cincinnati!
What was the stack u worked on if i may ask ?
The reality is a lot of people will need to move for their first job.
Be as frugal you can, save up a 6mo emergency fund. Almost impossible to do in your first year but make as much headway as you can, ahead of contributing over your employer match or paying extra on your student loans. Worry about that stuff after you’ve built up some assurance that a layoff isn’t super likely to make you uproot your life because you ran out of runway.
Goldman Sachs?
Same here, laid off in June 11 months into my SWE role, which I obtained from my internship. I was still battling with imposter syndrome and stuff, so it REALLY destroyed my confidence as a dev. I’ve applied to about 25 roles so far, but at this point I’m thinking about pivoting. Good luck out there.
Sounds pretty dumb. So you lost your job, find a new one, move somewhere else. Going back ‘home’ is stupid
Recently graduated about to close my 2 years, so much talk about letting my team go by the end of the year getting me all over the place. Gotta start prepping for study n interview on Monday. Not waiting for them to let me go.
