#ThoughtsOnGenderChangeSurgeryPetition
Hey y’all, so I stumbled upon this small petition in my town pushing for free gender change surgery and allowing it before 18. My take on it? Well, here’s why I think it might not be the best idea 🤔
### Why Making Gender Change Surgery Free Might Not Be the Best Move 🚫
So, here’s the deal – in Italy, the full extent of gender change surgery can cost around 40k to 50k. While the government does offer some assistance, it’s not completely free. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for accessible healthcare, but hear me out. We still have people struggling with basic dental care, where there’s little to no help available from the government. I mean, have you tried getting a dental procedure done while being broke af? Not fun. Shouldn’t we prioritize fixing these issues first before diving into free gender change surgeries?
### The Issue with Allowing Gender Change Surgery Before 18 ⚠️
Another point to consider is allowing minors to undergo gender change surgery. Personally, I think it’s a tricky territory. At a young age, individuals are still figuring out who they are and what they want in life. Making such a life-altering decision before fully understanding the consequences could lead to regret down the road. Maybe it’s best to wait until they reach an age where they can grasp the complexity of such a decision and make an informed choice.
### Final Thoughts 💭
While the intention behind the petition might come from a good place, there are definitely some aspects that need serious consideration. Prioritizing essential healthcare needs and ensuring individuals are making informed decisions about their bodies are crucial factors to think about. Let’s open up the discussion and work towards a solution that benefits everyone in the long run. What do you think about it? Let’s chat! 💬🌟
Yeah, sometimes a trans person realises that that’s not what they actually want. My gf was trans for 2 years before she realised that she actually wasn’t.
The second point I would let stand for now. I’m not all that sure what my position really is on it and could construct any argument with a solid basis. For the first point tho it really sounds like a more general issue with the medical care system in italy. I live in germany and free health care is very accessible and had great coverage here. So its definitely possible to make changes in a better direction. If gender affirming surgery is the right point to start is another conversation but generally improving the system and making it more accessible to low income households it’s seriously important
As a fellow trans italian, I agree, but then we should open gender services for younger people (stigma is the key issue here) and prescribe puberty blockers to those who need them. That would make many surgeries unnecessary, and give people time to figure out what they want to be without irreversible changes.
I don’t know about age of consent in Italy , but how the hell are they gonna make it ‘free’ ? Social insurance ?
It is stupid, no one should be able to do shit about their gender until at least 18, I’m tired of people saying its okay, no it aint! Anyone below 18 doesn’t have the mental maturity to know what they really really want
why doesn’t everyone just have a dick and a pussy? or better yet, if we had another method of reproduction, neither! make it simple or don’t make it at all.
I agree
I think it’s an amazing idea. We can focus on multiple issues at once and save the lives of trans kids. Depends on the surgery, though. I’d say SRS 18+ but the other ones are fine 🤷
as a trans guy i honestly agree, i dont think people should be able to get gender affirming SURGERIES under 18. hormones should be 16 (which they are) and hormone blockers should be any age whatsoever
Yeah getting surgery before 18 is just a massive *nope*
It should be based on age of consent tbh
Idk if this gonna get me back lash but i feel like doctors shouldn’t be able to do the surgery until your brain is fully developed cause like as teen your mind is raging with emotions constantly changing and i don’t get why they let teens start taking hormones so young cause like what if they regret it or they want to stop
Separate the issue from your friends. You can support your trans friends while having reservations about the petition.
As a trans person, yes. I wish I could get surgery before 18 but I know it could end up being a stupid idea. It shouldn’t be so expensive but neither should food and other basic needs. While it could be lifesaving for some people, so could therapy or medication. Everything is expensive, it sucks but we have to deal with it. Minors probably shouldn’t be going through surgeries unless absolutely necessary.
Yeah I agree, the way we feel now isn’t even gonna be the same in 5 years. Our mind is constantly changing, it never stops
Yes, yes, a very sane take. I respect it, sir
I agree
if you want it, pay for it
and doing it before 18 is just, no, I don’t believe that’s a choice most teens should be able to make, we aren’t mature enough
