Is there a path? If you don’t have money, intelligence or connections I feel like life just won’t work out for you
Sorry for your loss
That’s extremely sad. Condolences to everyone who knew her.
I myself admittedly frequently consider ending my life. But so far haven’t done it because of my family. Not sure how much longer I can keep going tho.
This is why your profession shouldn’t be your identity. Let your life outside of work be your source of happiness/achievement instead of titles or money. You’ll never be happy chasing more money.
So sad. Oftentimes it’s those type of harrowing events that remind us how life’s treasures are the memories we make with our loved ones.
Besides, no one cares who the richest man in the grave is…
Very tragic and condolences for their family.
Recently made the decision that I’m only working 45 hours each week. I’d rather tell a client their deliverable may be late and my billing not the highest than lose connection with my family.
First off, I just want to say that I am so sorry to hear about your friend’s daughter.
Also, I wanted to add 2 things to your post:
1) You are totally right about prioritizing mental health. This is why I absolutely hate those NPCs on social media that promote hustle culture and glamorize entrepreneurship. They think you have to live like a monk and sacrifice everything to be some retired multimillionaire or even multibillionaire by 30 to be successful. This causes many people to follow that lifestyle just for money and success when they have 0 passion or vision. And they also think that a normal job is soul sucking and hate working for others when entrepreneurship literally requires you to work 24/7 and your customers and clients are your bosses.
2) When you say the job market is rough in finance, do you mean just high finance like IB, PE, HF, VC or also corporate finance? Imost likely want to do corporate finance, probably FP&A and just want to have a better idea.
Fuck. This hits close to home. After graduation I got a great job in Equity Research. Economy suffered ~2 years ago and I was laid off. An entire year went by without work for me, and I was suffering mentally and emotionally at a level that could never be understood by anyone that hasn’t experienced it. I now have a job in Business Development. Its not exactly my dream path, but i’m making fairly good money, and its better than nothing I take it. My scars still aren’t healed from that year. Hopefully one day they are.
Sorry about your friend’s daughter OP. Tragic. The pressure young people feel to succeed in society should not be underestimated. Its such a burden that, in the event similar to your friends daughter, they may even take their lives if they believe they’re not living up to expectations. Its fucking terrible.
