UnpaidLunchBreak #EmploymentRights #FairWork
What’s the Deal with Unpaid Lunch Breaks?
Unpaid lunch breaks are a common practice in many workplaces, but are they fair? 🤔 Let’s dive into the arguments and insights surrounding this contentious issue.
Why Do Unpaid Lunch Breaks Feel Like a Scam? 💡
For employees, lunch breaks can often feel more like a continuation of work rather than a true break. Here’s why:
-
Limited Freedom:
- 🚫 Not Your Own Time: Many workers argue that lunch breaks can’t be considered ‘free time’ because they can’t freely use it as they wish.
- 🚗 Travel Constraints: The impracticality of driving 15 minutes one way means you’re essentially tethered to the workplace.
- Workplace Obligations:
- 📅 Unpaid Periods: Employees believe they should be compensated during these periods as it contributes to the overall workday structure.
The Case for Paid Lunch Breaks: Why It Makes Sense 💸
Here’s why paying for lunch breaks could benefit both employees and employers:
-
Employee Satisfaction:
- 😊 Happy employees are more productive. Paid lunch breaks could drastically improve job satisfaction and morale.
-
Retention Rates:
- 🔄 Higher retention rates mean fewer hiring and training costs. Fair treatment keeps employees loyal.
- Health and Well-being:
- 🍎 Adequate breaks ensure employees have enough time to eat and decompress, reducing burnout and health issues.
Legalities: What Does the Law Say? ⚖️
The law on lunch breaks varies by location. Generally, there are:
-
Mandatory Breaks:
- 🚨 Some regions require employers to provide breaks after a certain number of work hours but don’t mandate paid breaks.
- Paid vs. Unpaid:
- 💼 In some places, paid breaks are optional, and employers decide based on their policies.
Employers’ Perspective: Why Unpaid Breaks? 🏢
From the employer’s viewpoint:
-
Cost Management:
- 💲 Cutting costs on break periods can save money, especially in industries with tight margins.
- Policy Tradition:
- 📜 Longstanding traditions and policies may dictate unpaid breaks, resisting change due to precedent.
How to Advocate for Paid Breaks ✊
If you believe in the cause and want to make a change, here’s how to start:
-
Unionize:
- 🧑🤝🧑 Seek support from labor unions that can provide a strong collective voice.
-
Negotiate:
- 🤝 Present a case to your employer, highlighting the benefits for both sides.
- Legal Action:
- ⚖️ Investigate legal routes if current laws may support paid breaks in your industry.
Conclusion: Is It Time for Change? ⏳
The debate over unpaid lunch breaks is far from settled. While employers aim to control costs, employee satisfaction and fair treatment are critical. Paid lunch breaks could be a significant step toward more equitable work environments, enhancing both morale and productivity.

It actually was that way once upon a time, hence 9 to 5. One of those hours was lunch. I agree with you, it’s just another thing that corporate America has taken away.
I get paid during my lunch, however people can come and interrupt it,…
dont even get me started on unpaid commutes
Paid commutes.
Paid lunch.
Paid overtime (**NO** exemptions).
… would be the great equalizer.
Paid parking
The entire lunch system has gone down the gutter.
It used to be a 9 til 5 work day with an hour’s break paid or not. then that hour became half an hour, then it stopped being included in the 9 til 5 so now it’s 9 til 5:30 or 8:30 til 5, and if you’re lucky enough to get an hour for lunch its 9 til 6.
And at least when the break was an hour you had time to actually go and do something out of the office. With half an hour you have time to eat your lunch and that’s it.
For a half hour lunch I agree. Gotta either eat in the break room or car and then haul ass back. But they will brag about paid breaks. 15 minutes.
I agree. I’d prefer to not take a lunch and then leave that much earlier. I feel trapped in the building by not having enough time to go anywhere.
Everyday i am grateful that i work a true 9-5 with paid lunch break and 2 paid breaks. I come in 5-10 mins before 9 but start working at 9 and then leave at 5. We do clock in but it’s for attendance purposes.
I work a 12 hour shift with paid lunches I can take anytime in the middle 10 hours of my 12 and let me tell you it’s great.
If I can’t have a drink on an unpaid lunch it ain’t my time
I’ve started making and eating lunch while I’m still on the clock then doing chores during the actual 30 min unpaid lunch break I’m forced to take. Fuck em.
I agree I never know until I come in that day ( and it’s subject to change after I come in) when my break would be. And it’s not dependent on what time by shift starts. Plus sometimes I’m told I don’t get a break but I get to leave an hour early. I cant make my break my own time with all of those possibilities. Oh and my work has no break room.
I’m at work 42.5 hours a week but only get paid for 40 hours because of these forced unpaid lunches. Like fine I get it. It’s a driving job and you need your rest so you don’t crash. But at least let me *pick* where I want to take lunch since I’m not getting paid for it. But nope. Gotta take lunch wherever you’re at. Like today I was out in the country and had to take lunch by sitting in a field staring at my phone for 30 minutes.
I am glad I work nocs in a hospital. I work a straight 8. I can eat at the desk as long as the patients are resting. But I do not have to clock out because we cannot leave the hospital grounds. I generally do not eat at work. I may bring a snack or sometimes my husband sends pizza for me to share with my co-workers. But generally I just drink water and a soda to keep alert.
In many countries the lunch break is 2 hours long. 30 minutes isn’t enough time to eat unless you eat scary fast
I stopped logging out for lunch in 2020. I used to eat at my desk anyway but much rather work the straight 8 and not pretend.
Unpaid bathroom breaks
Yeah, when the fuck did 9-5 become 8-5 or 9-6? (and beyond)? This is trash.
I see your unpaid lunch break and add my situation. Factory allowed no more than 14 hours per day. I worked 7am to 3pm. They would give me a 2 hour break from 3pm to 5 pm so they could work me 16 hours a day.
Home was 1 hour from the factory. I didn’t have enough time to go home and return. I was expected to nap in the parking lot for 2 hours ,then return to work refreshed and ready to go another 6 hours.
Organize a union and fight for it. You think the 40 hour work week and child labor laws were something some benevolent business people dreamt up?
No. Workers fought for it.
Don’t mourn. Organize.
I get an hour paid lunch break daily. I’m never going back.
In healthcare a lot of places dont even let you leave the premises for your lunch break. So its unpaid but they still have your time. In case of ” emergency ” aka patient family members poking their heads into the breakroom to talk to you while youre eating
My old job gave us an hour for our unpaid lunches. A hour is enough time to go somewhere and eat a meal without looking like a zoo animal trying to scarf down slop.
I lived close enough to go home, eat, watch TV, and get back to work on time.
Current job only grants a half hour unpaid but I frequently take 45 minutes to an hour. It only hurts my paycheck. The company saves money. And I get to eat with dignity and peace.
The only people who have ever complained are a couple hourly coworkers who accused me of cheating the company with these long breaks. They went to HR. It turned out these two morons were not clocking out for their lunch break. They ate on the clock, on the company dime, and could not understand that I actually followed the rules and clocked out.
It turned out I was in fact the only person in the entire department actually following the rules. Two other guys clock out for lunch but go right back to work for 30 off the clock. They clock back in, still working. Then at the end of the shift, they sit around on the clock for half an hour to balance it out.
The rest of the team skips lunch.
It’s a mess and management is not remotely concerned about any of it, nor whether I take my long lunch breaks.
Amen. Work at the airport. Where can I go? If that’s not bad enough people will just bitch the whole 30min they only have microwave’s which I hate. And don’t get me started with taking a bus to the terminal that’s takes 30 min one way. It’s takes me 18min to get to airport and then 30min to get from a parking lot to the terminal. It’s so stupid wasting. A free hour on the bus and that stupid free 30 lunch.
💯
I once had a job where we had paid lunches and it was glorious. To clock out and then have to clock in to make your day longer than necessary is just abuse.
I have to pay to park… at my fucking job
At my old job, we used to have 30 minutes paid lunch. But if you go off-site, you take an hour unpaid.
Worked well for everyone
You get a lunch break? Nice, sign me up.
Eating my half room temperature lunch as I walk from one building to another 😆
Someone on my team called our job a “typical 8-6” and I wanted to gag
I WFH. I love my unpaid lunch. I get the whole house clean and prep dinner. It is definitely my time.
My soon to be former boss did not know that an hour paid lunch break is mandatory in my state for all full time workers…apparently she’d guilt people into eating quickly and not using it all up and going back to work ASAP because “we’re a nonprofit”. Subzero IQs among management and above seems to be universal.
I worked at Johnson and Johnson orthopedic manufacturing about 5-6 years ago, and they still paid for lunch. Not out of the goodness of their heart- but because they ran 3 shifts and if they forced everyone to take an unpaid lunch they’d basically be paying everyone for a free half hour to stand around holding their dick while the next shift came in. Shifts were 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm, 10pm-6am. If they hadn’t, shifts would have been 6am-2:30pm, 2pm-10:30pm, and 10pm-6:30am. Again, they didn’t do it out of the goodness of their hearts- it’s because they didn’t want to pay more than the bare minimum. Technically people still had to clock out, but only got docked if they went over, they still got paid for 40 hours instead of 37.5. Not sure if this was a Massachusetts labor law, but I don’t believe for a second this was for anything other than accounting reasons.
It takes me 7 minutes to walk from the clock to my car one way. What the fuck can I possibly accomplish in a half hour.
Lunch breaks kinda suck. I would rather get off 30 earlier. I can’t imagine an hour lunch 🤢
I get 2 15s paid one 30 unpaid guess what gets skipped if i “dont have time”
As a salary employee in the trucking industry I am expected to not take a lunch or even breaks. 10 hours five days a week and they squeeze you to the last drop
At least you guys don’t have to work the 10:30 to 8 every day like me….
*laughs in service industry* what breaks?
Thanks for bringing this up, I had never thought of it. I’ll be implementing this in my small business this week, because you are absolutely right!
I agree. At my last job there were quite a few apprentices. Kids. They were always late back from the shops getting lunch. I rarely left site for luck but did sometimes. The boss got the shits with the kids being late back and tried to institute a ‘no leaving site’ policy for lunch.
I laughed in his fucking face. I said that if I’m not getting paid then that half hour is mine to do what I want with and if I want to leave site for a burger , I will.
I told him never fuck with my time. If he wanted he could penalise financially those who are late every day but couldn’t chastise everyone for the faults of a few.
Even if it was paid.. it’s lunch in a free country. I’ll do what the fuck I want.
9 to 5 has become 8 to 5. It is insane.
It makes zero sense. If I were to not eat the whole day I would feel like shit and that would affect my work. Not that people have to be productive to be valuable, but investing in your employees wellbeing is investing in a good company
All these perks have disappeared and the money they cost funnels to the big Fat CE zEro.
