This is so wrong on so many levels. I’m sorry. You don’t have to justify polishing your self-presentation to him.
None of his f-ing business.
– “Why did you update your resume?”
– “Because it’s mine and I do what I want with it?”
You could have asked him, “Have you ever considered updating your social skills?”
“Updating resume is a maintenance item I perform regularly to ensure I’m capturing my achievements, skills & growth to ensure I don’t forget anything”
I update my resume so that I know I am continually valued at my present place of employment. If you are worried that I am unsatisfied, let’s talk about what you can do to fix that.
Oooh, submit this to Ask A Manager. She’ll have great advice for you.
Start looking again, because it’s almost certain that your boss is now looking for a reason to fire you.
“I thought it would reflect well on the business, both because it makes it clear they value their employees’ professional development and because if I look like a better potential employee, my employer looks better too.”
It doesn’t have to be your actual motivation, but it does happen to be generally true. That he doesn’t get that is pretty pathetic.
It’s a job, not a marriage. It’s not like you swore before God in a church to be faithful, sickness and health, and all that shit.
If they want to keep you from jumping ship to a new job, they can make it a better place to work for you.
He tries to guilt trip you into believing that he does you a favor by letting you work for him. Especially with that dating website phrase. Don’t buy it, such a cheap and petty move
Why is indeed recommending resumes to him if he isn’t looking to hire???
He sounds like an idiot. Just say somebody stole your identity recently and took your resume too. He’ll probably fall for it.
“Why are you looking on Indeed if you aren’t looking to hire my replacement?”
“Oh that? Yeah, that’s none of your business”
First off, unprofessional as hell. Second, none of his business. Third, get the hell out of there, yesterday! This guy is trying to emotionally manipulate you and you are accepting it because your older brother is kind of a dick too. Those behaviors and the way they speak to you are inappropriate at any age. The older you get, you have no excuse to be an asshole. Fuck that noise. You have the experience to know how to treat people right. Assholes are assholes. There is no masking it.
Leave.
Just in case my boss is looking to hire my replacement without my knowledge
If you’re not always open to a better opportunity, you’ll miss many.
I update mine every year after my annual performance review. I have been at the same job for 9 years now. I still apply to jobs and do at least 1 interview a year. It’s a skill that has to be maintained. Plus who knows, maybe a better opportunity will present itself.
“Every mass layoff I have seen in the last 10 years has been without notice. The corporate world is volatile and I don’t have the same protection you do. Anyone who doesn’t update their resume regularly is an idiot.”
