Hey fellow gamers! 🎮
So, I’ve been diving deep into games like Fallout Shelter and Elder Scrolls: Castles, and while they both have their strong points, I find myself yearning for something slightly more robust. I love the whole experience of building a vault or a castle, managing people, exploring the world, and uncovering stories. However, I wish there was a game out there that combines all these elements seamlessly while adding a touch of uniqueness.
I’m on the lookout for a game that allows me to design and customize my base, assign people to different roles based on their skills, make impactful decisions with dialog options, and indulge in exploration. Oh, and let’s not forget the satisfaction of seeing your workers going about their daily tasks!
But here’s the thing – I want a game that goes beyond the conventional. I want a game where my decisions have real consequences, where progression is tangible and meaningful, and where the world feels alive with characters aging and facing challenges beyond combat.
I’ve played some fantastic games like Black and White, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, FTL, This War of Mine, and Rebuild, but I’m still on the hunt for that one game that ticks all the boxes.
So, if you know of any games that offer a similar experience or perhaps even better than what Fallout Shelter and Elder Scrolls: Castles have to offer, please drop your recommendations below. Let’s share our gaming wisdom and discover hidden gems together! 🌟
Can’t wait to hear your suggestions! Game on! 🎮💬🔍
From what I’ve SEEN of it (I’ve not actually played it) Rimworld looks like it could be for you!
Rimworld
Thirding Rimworld
Been waiting like 3 months for elder scrolls castles to release. Glad to hear it’s a disappointment

Sheltered (the first one)
If you havent yet, I would definitely pick up the original Roller Coaster Tycoons 1 and 2 (saw 3 on your list) They’re both very fun loaded with content!
surviving the aftermath
Frostpunk
You might like Medieval Dynasty. It doesn’t check every single box but you are in this land building up a town, assigning people tondo tasks, exploring and discovering more about a family member of yours who recently die.
You don’t upgrade the people of your town, you get upgraded yourself, there’s also no sending people out of the town, but it could scratch the itch.
It’s available on Steam, so it’s probably on the Steam Deck too?
Dwarf Fortress has some of the elements you want, though I’m not sure it has all that you want. Story, for example.
Rimworld for sure
Going Medieval is pretty great and checks a lot of boxes (not all.) Though it’s still in early access.
Surviving Mars is pretty close as well.
Try Sheltered, which is just Fallout: Shelter as a more complete experience without any of the Fallout IP or microtransactions.

Check out Manor Lords! There’s a guy playing it in my Discord right now and he’s having a blast, it’s surprisingly detailed and in-depth! Good luck with your search o7
Have you heard of Evil Genius? The conceit is that you are building a James Bond villain style lair. I watched a streamer I like [play through a campaign here](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj_Goi54wf0f1e5kESFN0WGZN1aG-CIQp&si=TiY-FS3f6dd-qlT3) if you want to check out whether it scratches your itch.
Someone is going to hate on me for this… but Dwarf Fortress does all that and more.
If you’re looking for something you can more easily pick up and play check out XCOM 2… more focus on training and turn based missions but extremely similar base setup and options to what you’ve mentioned enjoying.
Both viable options, just different gameplay focus.
