#CareerFlexibility #WorkLifeBalance #FamilyFirst
Hey everyone! 👋 I’ve been exploring different career options lately, but one thing that’s really important to me is having a good work-life balance so I can spend quality time with my family. I’d love to hear from all of you about what you do for work and how many hours you typically work in a week.
Here are some questions to consider when sharing:
– What is your job title and industry?
– How many hours do you typically work in a week?
– Do you have flexibility in your schedule?
– How do you prioritize family time while working?
I’m also open to hearing any career ideas or suggestions you may have that offer flexibility for those of us with families. Let’s share our experiences and help each other find careers that allow us to thrive both professionally and personally. Can’t wait to hear from you all! 🌟
Cook 36 hours
Software Engineer, sometimes normal 40 hour weeks sometimes 60+ or more. I have had multiple 9am-12am days (15 hour days) the past couple of months.
I could go on a huge rant about it all but dont get into tech. Many jobs are even worse than mine especially SRE/DevOps.
Or the poor QA on my team who also have to work Saturdays on top of having to do a 60 hour week *before* Saturday.
I am a property manager with my own company. The hours really flex- I’ve had 5 properties and I work maybe 15 hours a week and I currently have 25 properties and I’m working 60-80. Obviously the more properties I have the more money I make.
It’s high stress at times but I have a lot of flexibility. I take time to see family and friends when I can, I can make appointments for any time of day and I don’t need permission to do what I want to do. I work from home and sometimes abroad when my partner travels.
I think it’s really important to figure out what is the most important aspect of your career and work with that. For me, it’s working from home, having a flexible day to day, no micromanagement, making good money, and travelling as I see fit. Everyone is different
Pilot. Work about 9-12 days a month
Tech consultant. Approx 40 billable hours per week – sometimes more, sometimes less. No weekend work or off-hours calls and can take personal appointments during the day due to good culture of work-life balance at my company.
Sometimes I go on-site to my clients’ office for a few days at a time but client pays for all food and drinks even on travel days/sightseeing days on either side.
Power plant operator. I work 84 hours each pay period. Work week flip flops between 36 and 48 hour work weeks and between day shift and night shift.
I work a modified DuPont schedule. I basically work 2 weeks a month.
Facilities manager.
Rarely 40 hours, usually about 50, and other times up to 70. Depends on what was going on or how many things I was juggling.
Official hours were 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Hours could change if I was covering for another manager or we had inspections/tests, service shutdowns for repairs, or other things.
If you want good work/life balance then facilities management would probably not be high on the list. That balance depends on the industry, however.
Some industries, like gaming, run 24/7/365 so there are no holidays off and will require you to work off hours or be available by phone/text. You need to use PTO if you want a holiday off. Pretty bad work/life balance.
Other industries such as convention/meeting services give you holidays off with a much more stable work schedule because of the building’s operational hours. This is more conducive to work/life balance.
I’m a retired career firefighter so I worked a 24 hour shift then had 48 hours off. I worked every third day, so one week I worked 72 hours, the next week I worked 48. The only drawback was, I had one weekend a month that I was home. The other weeks I only had one day or the other off.
Budget Analyst. Strictly 40 hours. No more, no less. My working hours are 8AM-4:30PM. I just take 30 min lunch break to go home 30 min earlier.
Edit: job is not stressful at all.
