Hey everyone! 🌟
I recently received an intriguing job offer from TikTok USDS, and I’m at a bit of a crossroads about whether to accept it. The position is located in NYC, and the base salary sounds pretty appealing at around $135k. However, I’m hearing some unsettling things about the notorious work-life balance there, and that’s got me in a bit of a dilemma. 🤔
Here’s what’s weighing on my mind:
- Work-Life Balance Concerns: Many folks mention that the hours can be grueling, and that can take a toll on your mental and physical health. I totally get that, as I’ve always believed that a job shouldn’t dominate your life!
- Relocation: If I accept this offer, I’d have to make a big move. It’s not just a job but a change of scenery, too. If things don’t pan out, it could mean moving back home, and that’s a hassle.
- Health and Well-being: I believe it’s crucial to prioritize your health and sanity. The thought of quitting due to burnout after going through all the trouble of relocating is definitely daunting. 😟
So, here’s what I’m thinking:
- Trial Period: Maybe I could negotiate a flexible work arrangement to test the waters before fully committing? That way, I can gauge the work culture without it being a leap of faith.
- Company Culture Research: It might help to dig deeper into reviews or connect with current employees to get the lowdown on what day-to-day life is really like there—an honest perspective can make a world of difference.
Now I need your thoughts! Have any of you worked at TikTok or faced similar dilemmas? How did you handle it? Any tips for managing work-life balance in a high-pressure job? 🤝
I’d love to hear your experiences and advice! Let’s chat! 💬
Comb is low for NY but the your post is written you’d imagine they send you to a concentration camp
I have a friend who works at tiktok and his wlb is pretty good although his comp is also much higher. It depends on the team.
$135K base in NYC probably means a roommate or living in the outer boroughs, but theoretically your TC will be higher with bonus and stock so ymmv. It’s enough to find something depending on your priorities but you’ll compromise somewhere.
What is USDS?
Why even go through the process of interviewing if you’re not going to move for the job?
Unless you have multiple job offers I’d take it and move. No job is perfect, and FAANG like companies are known to have bad WLB.
u can prob get an apt in Jersey city or hoboken if u don’t mind the commute
Where are you moving from? And how old are you?
WLB is more so defined by the team/manager than company you work for. You say “advice needed” but leave out the most important stuff! Are you a new grad and this would be your first job? Then hell yeah take the job! Are you currently employed but looking to find a new opportunity? Then the answer is it depends… on what you current job looks like in terms of TC/WLB and what other offers you have. BTW Do you have any other offers? Also living in NYC for a year or two is a good lifetime experience when you’re young. Forget about WLB how bad can it be – I would just do it just for the life experience – but then again depends on your age (which you left out…) Takehome on 135k is aprox 90k. That’s 24/26 paychecks of 3500. Even if one of those paychecks goes fully to rent you’d still have a nice time in NYC. You can get an apartment for 2000 too; it all depends where you want to leave; how long the commute to midtown will be and if you get roomates or not.
TikTok/ByteDance has always been known for terrible WLB, at least compared to U.S. tech companies. Still a decent brand name to have on your Resume, if you’re willing to make the sacrifice.
But TikTok will likely get banned soon in the U.S., so maybe reconsider and try to find another opportunity instead.
Heard that TikTok is a hit or a miss, depends a lot on the team you will land on
Given the market, take the job. The pay is good enough and being in NYC is a big value add. You can 100% afford to live, but you would have to make some concessions. Not sure where you are from, but you will be living car-free if you choose to live in the City. People from other places forget how much they spend on transportation and that is a big saving. Don’t try to live in the hottest areas, unless you are okay with roommates. You can afford a decent one bedroom or studio in Queens or Brooklyn if you look hard enough. Jersey City, where I live, is an alternative option. It is not much cheaper, then add a car into the mix, you’ll be spending just as much as NYC. Congrats on the offer!
