Are you debating whether to switch from a stable job at a large, reputable company to a small start-up with exciting prospects? Here’s a summary of my situation and concerns to help you navigate your decision:
Current Job:
– Large company with great work-life balance, benefits, and reputation
– Unhappy with current boss and pay
– Potential opportunity to switch departments
Job Offer at Start-Up:
– Company founded in 2019 with under 200 employees
– Consulting job with nearly double the salary
– Claims of 32-hour work weeks with no more than 45 hours during peak projects
– Uncertainty about job satisfaction and travel requirements
Key Considerations:
– Unsure about being a consultant
– Mixed feelings about leaving stability for a start-up in an uncertain economy
– Potential opportunity for growth at current job
Ultimately, the decision hinges on your career satisfaction and goals. Are you ready to take the leap into the unknown world of a start-up, or is there room for growth and change within your current company? Would you get a W2 or a 1099 at tax time?
I’ve worked for very tiny companies (5pp) and very large companies (100k+ pp) and everything in between.
The thing with a very large company is that you aren’t stuck with your boss forever.
I’ve learned over the last 25 years at my very large company that I can outlast the less than ideal managers.
A good one is never far away. And the more I can contribute to their success, the faster they get promoted and out of my life.
