New jobs pays 50% more. As an IC you basically are you own company and can deduct the mileage as and other items as business expense. Check with accountant on how to do that.
Anytime you can get a 50% raise take it. Continue to build your skills and increase pay.
IC is a little bit trickier – in a nutshell your doing your own taxes and pretty sure your stuck doing your own health insurance as well + basically anything else related.
Given you live in Arkansas – it might make sense to do this but if this were anywhere more HCOL I would say no.
Independent contractor? Are you covered under medical insurance? Does the company have insurance and contractual language that covers you? If not and you have to carry your own liability insurance your costs start to add up fast.
The only reason I’d call it worth it is for the resume. Other than that it doesn’t sound that great. $10 raise is great, but like others mentioned, your covering your own health insurance and all that jazz along with the tax confusion. Decently a tough call in my opinion
Don’t do it. Continue going to school then you can start worrying about finding something better
Also with field engineer I think you will be traveling working at different sites
If they paid $40 an hour I’d take it. Counteroffer with $45. If they say no tell them $40 is the lowest you’ll take. What do you have to lose?
I would not take it. stay where you are. once you graduate and have certifications you will be able to find better jobs. trust me I was in your shoes a few years ago.
> the shifts are 7-3:30 M-F.
Red flag here. If you’re a 1099 contractor, they can’t tell you how or when to do your job.
Dont do it. Stay with the DOD and upskill. Leave for a better job. You need at least 30% more than your current job and if you get sick with the DOD you still get paid.
There are also retirement benefits and your taxes are easier on W-2. DOD is a great place to continue your education.
Being 1099 also means you have write-offs. So while you might not get compensated for mileage, you can write it off on the backend. If you are making $30 an hour, you should be able to hire an accountant that can help you mitigate what those expenses are
I’ve done a similar job before and it’s fine. It can really tear through your car. Make sure to set aside 25% of your pay for taxes – you basically have to pay more in taxes than you do as a W2, and they aren’t taking it out of your checks. You’re supposed to pay taxes quarterly or pay a penalty when you do them yearly. You’ll be writing a big check that will be painful. We always had some guys who didn’t put it aside and then call screaming when they had to pay $15K-30K at tax time.
1099 means you need to set aside 20-40% of your pay for taxes since you’re paying them all, personal and the business/employer portion. Keep the steady job and finish school, then go hard in the paint for pay. A solid job that you can perform well is such a hot commodity right now. Bird in the hand.
50 minute drive hell no
1099 fuck no lmao
Not worth the drive, it does sound like your boss kinda sucks though. I would focus on seeing if you can get some work from home jobs
Some people just have it good got asked for entry level fire fighter do I have any fire experience I said no I don’t set arson
Field Tech contractor? Eh… I don’t think I would do it, if you feel you are even somewhat safe in your current role. You would likely make LESS money, especially per hour.
That’s gonna be a no from me
