#StrangeRequest: Manager wants me to go to the accountant’s office with him. Is this normal? 🤔
Hey guys, I need your help with something that happened during my job offer process at a restaurant. So, usually, I’d just send my info online to get hired, right? But this time, the manager wants me to go with him to the accountant’s office in person. Seems a bit weird, don’t you think?
I mean, I’ve only talked to this guy for 10 minutes during the interview, and now he wants me to follow him to a mysterious location without even giving me the address? It just doesn’t sit right with me. What if it’s not even an accountant’s office, but his own place? 😱
So, am I just overthinking this or being paranoid? Have any of you come across something like this before? Help a girl out – I need your advice! Let’s chat about it below and figure this out together! 🕵️♀️🔍 #SketchySituation #HelpNeeded
I’ve never ever seen or heard of this.
NEVER GO TO A SECOND LOCATION!!!!!!!
That’s weird as hell. I’ve never heard of anyone being asked to visit an accountant’s office, even for very small businesses. A lot of small companies outsource their payroll & accounting, but there’s no need for new employees to visit any office in person. The accountant gives blank paperwork to management, and they passi ti along to the new hires.
And that’s if they’re old-fashioned & don’t do stuff online.
This sounds very suspicious to me, especially that he won’t give you the address.
Doesn’t sound normal or safe to me. Decline the offer and find somewhere else to work.
Insist on getting the accountants address and you will meet them there. And then take someone with you, they can always wait in the car if need be. You could always go in and ask the current staff about it?
I’ve worked in restaurants for a good decade and a half. Mom n pops as well as corporate. I’ve never had to go somewhere else other than the restaurant to get the hiring paperwork done.
I did have to speak to the office person, some places called it HR and for some it was I suppose like an accountant position. The latter was the office person who counted money and squared away server accountability from each shift. But they were always restaurant employees who were there to be talked to.
I wouldn’t go to another place together with the manager. It’s sketchy. And restaurant managers are 99% harasser types, in my experience.
It’s not weird, in that, employers are required to have the documents physically inspected to complete the I-9 (outside of specific circumstances). However, it is somewhat weird that he won’t give you the address.
Your question is good.
Our suspicions are up.
I would go with your intuition and move away from this job right away. I’ve never heard of a process like this before.
Hard no. Your intuition is right. This is shady as hell.
Just work somewhere else. It’s that simple kids. When something isn’t how you want it or feels uncomfortable, you have no obligations. Just move on
If he cannot provide you the accountant’s name or company name AND address and phone#, then there is no accountant. It’s a setup. Probably human trafficker.
New hire paperwork has nothing to do with an accountant. Be extra careful especially if you’ve given personal information already.
It is weird.
With that being said, it’s not uncommon for small businesses to outsource payroll, and it is possible he is using a local place. It’s possible instead of doing the paperwork inside of the restraunt and sending it to the accountant, he walks next door (or whatever) and just fills everything out right there.
I think you have two options, decide its too sketchy, or maybe ask some other employees at the restraunt if they had to do the same thing.
It feels wrong because it IS WRONG, no idea what maybe at work here but please do not do this.
There are other jobs
I’ve worked in several restaurants in America and have never ever met the accountant. Ever.
You did good feeling off about this. Don’t go. Change your phone number if you can. And fight a little for that. I can help if you want it. Go into protect yourself mode.
This is trafficking.
I am 57 yrs old and have been working since 16 and have NEVER heard of such a thing.
Are you sure he said accountant or did he say HR (Human resources)?
Either way, it seems suspect to me. That’s not how it’s done in usa. Trust your gut.
