Is your furry friend acting a little off lately? Maybe they’re not eating as much as usual or seem more lethargic than normal. When it comes to our beloved pets, it can be challenging to spot the signs of illness right away. That’s why it’s crucial to stay on top of their health and well-being. One simple yet effective way to do this is by investing in a baby scale and regularly weighing your pets.
Why Weight Matters
Nine out of ten times, weight loss is one of the first indicators that something may be wrong with your pet. Cats and dogs are masters at hiding their illnesses, making it even more critical to pay attention to subtle changes in their weight. By monitoring their weight regularly, you can catch potential health issues early on and take the necessary steps to address them.
Why a Baby Scale?
While your bathroom scale may work for your weight loss journey, it’s not precise enough for monitoring slight changes in your pet’s weight. Baby scales, which are relatively affordable on platforms like Amazon, provide the accuracy needed to track weight loss in ounces – a level of detail that can make a significant difference in detecting health concerns.
How to Get Started
Begin by introducing your pet to the baby scale when they are young, so they become comfortable with the process. Establish a routine of weighing them once a month and keep a record of their weight in a diary or a fancy Excel chart. Consistency is key to spotting any downward trends in their weight.
When to Take Action
If you notice a consistent decrease in your pet’s weight over time, it’s essential to consult with your veterinarian promptly. Early detection of health issues can lead to timely intervention and better outcomes for your furry companion.
Remember, your pet’s health is in your hands. By taking proactive steps like weighing them regularly, you can ensure they receive the care they need to live a long and healthy life. So, why wait? Invest in a baby scale today and start monitoring your pet’s weight – their well-being is worth it!
We use a bicycle scale. We put our cat in a bag and hook it to the bicycle scale. She stays still enough in a bag that it has worked so far.
One of my dog weighs 110lb, which baby scale do you recommend?
My cat follows me into the bathroom EVERY time I pee and sits on the scale to watch. Because it’s square. 13.5 every time. Lolol
Holding my animal while I stand on a scale is a lot easier than getting my animal to sit still on a baby scale.
I don’t think I care that much to weigh each of my crickets.
Mine are fat. They’re good.
Weight yourself. Pick up pet. Subtract your weight. Problem solved.

Instructions unclear, I now have a baby cow
I bought a smart scale a few years ago to help me keep an eye on my weight and I was surprised a few days after owning it to see the app on my phone said there were several recorded weights that the app didn’t recognize the identity of. My cat is semi-regularly weighing herself.
I weigh my cats with luggage scales. I put the cat in their carrier, weigh them and then weigh the empty carrier and take the difference.
It’s smaller to store (scales are the size of a glasses case) and the cat can’t run off when I’m weighing themÂ
The regular scales we use are only accurate to a pound or two. Not nearly accurate enough for a animal that weighs all of 10 lbs.
I have a kitchen scale for this. I put a small styrofoam cooler on top (lid removed of course). I zero the scale and put my cat in the cooler. I measure in grams. It takes a while as the weight bounces around until the cat sits still. But it’s very accurate and works well.
Not just cats and dogs, but also other pets. When I had hamsters, they regularly got weighed (on a kitchen scale I only used for them).
Or weigh yourself, then pick up your pet and weigh yourself again and do some math without having to buy another scale
