It's the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. I can hardly get a response on an application. Networking hasn't worked. I have fucking rent to pay. How can the economy be so bad?
Are you feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and helpless due to unemployment? You’re not alone. The emotional toll of being jobless can be crushing, affecting your self-esteem, mental health, and overall well-being. But fear not, there are coping strategies that can help you navigate this challenging period and emerge stronger on the other side. Here’s how you can cope with unemployment and reclaim your sense of purpose:
## Acknowledge Your Feelings and Seek Support
### 🤝 Embrace your emotions and allow yourself to grieve the loss of your job. It’s okay to feel sad, angry, or anxious. Reach out to friends, family, or a therapist for emotional support. Talking about your feelings can provide you with much-needed comfort and perspective.
## Set Realistic Goals and Create a Routine
### 🎯 Establish small, achievable daily goals to stay motivated and focused. Structure your day with a routine that includes job searching, networking, exercise, and self-care activities. Having a sense of purpose and direction can boost your mood and productivity.
## Upgrade Your Skills and Stay Relevant
### 📚 Take this downtime as an opportunity to enhance your skills and knowledge. Consider enrolling in online courses, attending webinars, or obtaining certifications in your field. Staying relevant and adaptable will make you more marketable to potential employers.
## Network Strategically and Stay Connected
### 🤝 Utilize professional networking platforms like LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals, recruiters, and potential mentors. Attend virtual networking events, career fairs, and informational interviews to expand your professional circle. Building relationships can open doors to hidden job opportunities.
## Practice Self-care and Stay Positive
### 💆♂️ Prioritize self-care activities that promote your physical and mental well-being. Engage in hobbies, meditation, exercise, or creative outlets to reduce stress and boost your mood. Cultivate a positive mindset by focusing on your strengths, achievements, and resilience.
## Explore Alternative Income Sources and Freelancing
### 💼 Consider freelance work, temporary gigs, or side hustles to generate income while searching for a full-time job. Offer your skills and expertise on freelance platforms, consulting gigs, or part-time opportunities. Diversifying your income streams can provide financial stability and career growth.
Remember, unemployment is a temporary setback, not a reflection of your worth or abilities. Stay resilient, adaptable, and proactive in your job search journey. By implementing these coping strategies, you can overcome the psychological torture of unemployment and emerge stronger, more empowered, and ready to seize new opportunities. America is cooked, good luck
I’m medically retired military and inhate it. If I don’t waste time talking about how angry I am for not being able to finish my twenty I can have pay taken and if I do, I become a target of police abuse bc people are scared of vets inherently as we don’t take shit well or make excuses. Routine, try to stay away from alcohol, animals, heck I even got chickens and a beehive now. I’m basically trying to save money long term and be useful

I was unemployed for a long time and used all the extra non working time to get extremely healthy and fit. Glad I did and now just have to maintain it while working.
Depends on your definition of torture. I went to my local art store, bought a bunch of canvases, paintbrushes, paint, an easel, an art cart, and bag to carry my canvases and supplies in. I painted non-stop for months. I took a painting class. I’m taking a sketching class now. I enrolled in a cohort to rethink my career options. I took a road trip.
It all helped. I’m interviewing now but for something totally different. I’m glad I took the time.
The economy is bad. It’s not a recession, and I hope it doesn’t get there, but over a quarter of a million people in my industry got laid off last year. The layoffs started the year before and are continuing. It’s bad because people and companies aren’t spending as much. If you’re not making sales, you need less staff. Workers are getting fired or laid off as a result.
The only respite is being offered a job for less than your last position and you have to wonder if its worth it to just not be unemployed.
Same here. Since I got laid off in Feb I feel super bored, no one to talk and feel beaten. Changing resume to match the job I’m applying but no response. I recruiter reach out to me to set up appointment but she ghosted me.
My last step is going to temp agency. Maybe they have something for me. Never give up bro !
The amount of stress definitely depends on the amount of financial stability someone has. Personally, I live a sort of “mini-retirement” life, where I work for a couple years, then I’m off for a couple years and repeat. My last unemployment was 3 years long and I took the time to travel, write and publish books, exercise, hobbies, and so on. When I decided it was time to join the workforce again, I went in search for a job, no worry involved.
But I do empathise with those who are in less fortunate circumstances. Finding a job when you need the money urgently can often be tough, be it financially, practically and/or emotionally. Hang in there, OP. Every week set new goals relating to your job search (ex. This week I will contact by email 15 jobs in x adjacent sector), I’ve found that it’s often effective in keeping hopes high and good for troubleshooting the job search.
I had to sign up for publicly funded therapy. It’s been a year of hell and I tried to sign up for Canada’s assisted suicide program but they won’t let you do it for mental health without going through a bunch of hoops. So I’m going to do the programs and if I’m still unemployed I’m going to make the government pay for my demise.
