If you’re a fan of 90s movies, you may be familiar with the hit film “The Bodyguard,” starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. But did you know that there was an attempt to create a sequel to this iconic movie, which involved none other than the beloved Princess Diana herself? Let’s delve into this fascinating and little-known piece of Hollywood history.
## The Bodyguard: A Cultural Phenomenon
Before we dive into the details of Princess Diana’s involvement in the planned sequel to “The Bodyguard,” let’s take a moment to appreciate the impact of the original film. Released in 1992, “The Bodyguard” was a commercial success and received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. The on-screen chemistry between Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, combined with the film’s iconic soundtrack, contributed to its status as a cultural phenomenon.
After the success of the first film, discussions about a sequel began to surface. Kevin Costner, who also served as a producer on the original movie, was eager to revisit the story and explore new possibilities for his character.
## Princess Diana: A Surprising Offer
In a surprising turn of events, Kevin Costner reached out to his longtime friend, Princess Diana, with an offer to star in the sequel to “The Bodyguard.” The idea of casting a member of the British royal family in a Hollywood film was certainly unconventional, but Costner saw the potential for a fresh and captivating storyline.
To his delight, Princess Diana expressed interest in the project and agreed to take on the role. The prospect of seeing the beloved princess on the silver screen alongside a Hollywood heavyweight like Costner generated immense excitement among fans and industry insiders alike.
## The Untimely Demise and Unfinished Business
Tragically, the world was shaken by the untimely death of Princess Diana on August 31, 1997. The news of her passing sent shockwaves across the globe and left a profound impact on those who admired her grace, compassion, and humanity.
Amidst the outpouring of grief and tributes to the princess, the film project that had brought together Costner and Diana faced uncertainty. The first draft of the sequel’s script had been completed and delivered to Princess Diana just a day before her tragic accident. With her sudden and heartbreaking departure, the future of the film was cast into doubt.
## The End of a Promising Collaboration
In the wake of Princess Diana’s passing, the planned sequel to “The Bodyguard” was ultimately shelved. The loss of such a remarkable and beloved figure left a void that could never be filled, and the project that would have marked her silver screen debut was abandoned as a result.
Despite the disappointment and sadness surrounding the unrealized sequel, the brief but poignant collaboration between Kevin Costner and Princess Diana stands as a testament to the enduring power of friendship, creativity, and the universal appeal of storytelling through cinema.
As we reflect on this lesser-known chapter in the history of film, it’s a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the poignant “what ifs” that linger in the wake of untimely loss. Princess Diana’s potential foray into acting remains a poignant “what could have been” moment in Hollywood history.
In conclusion, the planned sequel to “The Bodyguard,” featuring Princess Diana alongside Kevin Costner, represents a tantalizing glimpse into a cinematic collaboration that never came to fruition. Even though the project was never realized, it serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring appeal and impact of Princess Diana, both as a public figure and a potential Hollywood star.

God I can’t for the undeserved reverence for that london coke-whore to end.
Well that would have been an interesting alterative history where instead of Princess Diana passing, she became a Hollywood star.
This TIL would have been even crazier if the last line was “following her passing, the film was greenlit and produced, with her in the starring role.”
In the film version of events: The Bodyguard wouldβve disabled the paparazziβs car via some crazy maneuvers and drove out of that tunnel into the sunset.
Alas, life is not a movie.
He was then trying to get another spin off where he guards a professional sportswoman that plays the Italian version of lawn bowls, it never went ahead due to the studio bosses thinking that The Bocceguard was a stupid name for a film.
Some people will do anything to get out of a film obligation.
Heβs been telling this story for years, knowing that Royal Family policy is to never comment on any story in the press and never sue. Itβs an incredibly doubtful tale if only for the fact that Diana really hated her speaking voice and would try to talk as little as possible in public. Given how many years she was in the spotlight, thereβs comparatively little in terms of speeches and interviews, but in all of the ones out there she talks incredibly slowly, making sure to form each word perfectly and trying to control her voice and make it slightly deeper.
Princess Diana protecting Whitney Houston would be amazing.
‘long term friend’ – is it a AI headline FFS
After, not βfollowing.β Following is such an indistinct word.
βThis script is awesome, get me to a phone as quickly as possible!β
ok hear me out. My pitch is a movie where a bodyguard has to protect a recently deceased member of the British royal family, only noone else knows they are are dead and the bodyguard has to fool everyone to keep his job. Think The Bodyguard meets Weekend at Bernie’s.
It’s called Princess Die.
