Would getting her private insurance for a month and then canceling it trigger a new qualifying event?
I’ve handled benefits for 10 years and while technically the window for a QLE is indeed 30 days if the employer or broker requests a late add more often than not the carrier will make an exception. Especially when it’s only a couple weeks late.
If your company uses a broker you could also try asking them directly, explaining what happened. HR ultimately makes the call on whether they’ll make the request but if the broker can explain that a request can be made HR may be embarrassed enough to reverse their stance.
Does your wife have insurance now? Is there a way to lose the insurance? If so, that’s a QLE. Talk to HR, explain your situation and frustration about misinformation and see what can be done, there’s sometimes creative ways to make it happen.
Always call your provider when you have a specific insurance question
