#MiddleSchool #TeacherBias #Islamophobia #StopRacism #EducationSystem
Hey everyone, I am absolutely appalled and shocked. A middle school geography teacher called my nephew a terr*rist at school today. My nephew is 12 and this is his first time observing Ramadan and he was minding his own business with his friends when the teacher called him in front of his whole class that horrible name. He also called his Latino friends (taco topping). I feel sick to my stomach. My sister is going to speak to the principal but we also need to know what legal procedure we need to be able to stop this racist and Islamophobic behavior the kids are going through at this school.
## Understanding the Issue
### The Emotional Impact
When my nephew called me after school, his voice was trembling and he was on the verge of tears. He felt humiliated and targeted for his religious beliefs. This type of discrimination has a lasting impact on a child’s psychological well-being and self-esteem.
## Taking Action
### 1. Pressing Charges
If the school does not take appropriate action against the teacher, you have the right to press charges for discrimination and hate speech. Contacting a lawyer who specializes in civil rights cases can help you navigate the legal process.
### 2. Seeking Counseling
It’s essential for your nephew to receive emotional support during this difficult time. Look for a therapist who specializes in helping children cope with discrimination to ensure he receives the necessary guidance.
### 3. Community Support
Reach out to local advocacy groups and organizations dedicated to fighting discrimination and racism. They can provide resources, support, and guidance on how to address the issue at the school and within the community.
## Moving Forward
### Collaborating with the School
Work with the school administration to implement anti-bias training for teachers and staff to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. Encourage open dialogue about diversity and inclusion to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students.
### Empowering Students
Organize events and workshops that celebrate diversity and promote cultural understanding among students. Encouraging empathy and respect for different backgrounds can help foster a more inclusive school community.
In conclusion, addressing incidents of racism and discrimination in schools requires a multi-faceted approach that involves legal action, emotional support, community engagement, and proactive measures to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Let’s stand together against bigotry and intolerance to ensure every child feels respected and valued in their educational environment.
Get a lawyer. Also is your state a one party consent state? I’d have my kid start recording video with their phone in their pocket then go up to the teacher and say I didn’t appreciate you calling me a terrorist in front of the class yesterday. Why did you do that? Get them to admit it on video. Hell even if it’s not a one party consent state I might still get video evidence of them admitting it and use that as leverage against the school. This person should not be teaching children.
1) contact an attorney, if that doesn’t work 2) contact the school board and principal
That’s cartoonist villainous. I live in NYC so maybe it’s just the liberal bubble but I can’t imagine a teacher doing that. That’s barely even something homeless folks on the subway do. Are you sure the kids aren’t trying to get the teacher in trouble?
Follow the complaint ladder. 1. Principal 2. Superintendent 3. School board then 4. Lawyer. Put complaints in writing. There is a saying, “If it’s not in writing, then it never happened.” Good luck!

Try speaking to the Latino students parents as well. They might be considering the same.
It would help if your nephew has friends in the class who can be witnesses. If it’s true, it’s horrific and he should be fired. I wouldn’t immediately trust it though…12 is a prime age to make things up for effect without realizing it will create a shitstorm. I’m not saying assume he’s lying, just leave open the possibility and don’t do anything like public social media posting or hiring a lawyer until you’re sure.
If it is true, document everything– what was said word for word, what other students heard it, what students heard him call other students slurs. Go to the principal first, document the result. Insist your nephew is switched into another class–either the teacher is racist af or the teacher is subject to a false accusation, and in both cases, your nephew should be in a different class. If going to the principal doesn’t get him investigated and fired, go to the school board and document. If that doesn’t work, get a lawyer. You could get a lawyer first, but I think it’s better to report first. Maybe they’ll fire the teacher and you aren’t out $$. If they don’t, their refusal to act will give the lawyer more to work with.
“Minding his own business” lol
Go to the principal. Go to the person in your county that handles “Professional Misconduct”, and go the the superintendent.
If they try to brush it under the rug, go to your local news reporter.
There was a recent story about how a teacher in FL called a class of 4th grade student “retarded”. School tried hard to get it brush under the rug and pretend it didn’t happen.
Once it got heard by the local news, they wrote an article. The school then told that teacher to resign. A week after that article came out, they told parents she would no longer be teaching at the school.
This is disgusting behavior from a teacher.
If the school does not handle this issue, please speak with an attorney.
Make sure it actually happened. If it did, I’m sure the teacher will be terminated. If it happened, which I have my doubts, other than the teacher being terminated and losing her certification, I’m unsure what else could be done.
Contact a civil rights attorney. An organization like CAIR may have a referral list. Contact the school principal and school board with your attorney.Â
Call the ACLU or ADL. Both organizations have attorneys that are free and will give you good advice.
