Hey guys, did you know that when Rita Hayworth found out that the atomic bomb scheduled to be tested at Bikini Atoll would feature her likeness, she was not too happy about it? 🤯 In fact, her husband Orson Welles later revealed that she was the angriest he had ever seen her! 😡 She believed it was a publicity stunt orchestrated by the head of Columbia Pictures, and who can blame her for being upset about that?
Imagine finding out that a huge, destructive bomb was going to be named after you without your consent – that’s definitely not something anyone would want to be associated with! It just goes to show that even famous celebrities like Rita Hayworth can have their fair share of controversies and surprises. 🎬
“While Gilda was in release, it was widely reported that an atomic bomb that was scheduled to be tested at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean’s Marshall Islands would bear an image of Hayworth, a reference to her bombshell status. Although the gesture was undoubtedly meant as a compliment, Hayworth was deeply offended. Orson Welles, then married to Hayworth, recalled her anger in an interview with biographer Barbara Leaming: “Rita used to fly into terrible rages all the time, but the angriest was when she found out that they’d put her on the atom bomb. Rita almost went insane, she was so angry. … She wanted to go to Washington to hold a press conference, but Harry Cohn wouldn’t let her because it would be unpatriotic.” Welles tried to persuade Hayworth that the whole business was not a publicity stunt on Cohn’s part, that it was simply homage to her from the flight crew.”

TIL Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles were married.
Painting pin-up girls on stuff was a tradition in the military back then. It would be a PR nightmare and cause equal opportunity and sexist complaints if we did that now. If they put Miley Cyrus on a fighter jet I think it would be cool though.
Well, she was a bombshell.
I love that Rita Hayworth was furious about it. So many people supported the destruction.
*I am a satellite I’m out of control
I am a sex machine ready to reload like an atom bomb
About to oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, explode*
i only remember him as an old fat guy who used to show up on johnny carson now and then but apparently he was once hot enough to fuck rita hayworth. go big boy. 😮
She gave good face.
And it truly was a shawshank redemption
Atom bomb baby, with a temper to match!
God, I love when she does that shit with her hair.
Why did they use her likeness during the atomic bomb?
I wonder how she felt about helping that dude escape prison
Forget the bomb..you’re telling me that Orson Wells was married to Rita Hayworth? wth?
🎶 “You’re so vain, I bet you think this atomic bomb is about you, don’t you” 🎶
Is this where the term “she is a bombshell “ was born?
I was sitting in Bikini atoll and that was all that I needed, then I was shocked to look up and see Rita Hayworth there falling out of the sky
Rita: “They’re exploding an atomic bomb with my picture on it, Orson!!”
Orson: “Ahhhhh the ~~French~~ Atomic Energy Commission…”
Anyone got that Vonnegut story about the bomber pilot whose plane was named after his grandmother and he had a nuke and he knew his grandmother’s name would forever be associated with the murder of 100s of thousands civilians and he bacame uncomfortable with that and so he brought the nuke back to the base and the folks started scrambling? I love that story. Makes me wonder if Enola Gay Tibbets ever gave that much thought.
Well they didnt do a very good job. She looks nothing like a warhead.
I hope she never found out that convicted murderer Andy Dufresne used her likeness as part of his plot to escape from prison.
CHARLES FOSTER KANE
TIL Orson Welles was Rita Hayworth’s husband
I have such a hard time looking at Rita Hayworth now that I know about the extremely painful electrolysis she had to go through to get that hairline. https://arieselevenelectrolysis.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/rita-hayworth-before-after-hairline-electrolysis-2.jpg
I’d be pissed too. I’d never want to be even coincidentally associated with that. I’d be worried about being viewed as partially to blame for the atrocities committed with these weapons (Yes, I understand why the atom bomb was “necessary.” No, those people still didn’t deserve to die).
Is this where the term bombshell came from?
