Unemployment #Termination #NewJob #WorkplaceIssues
Wow, what a rollercoaster of a situation! Being fired after handing in your two weeks’ notice is definitely not something you hear about every day. It sounds like you were already on your way out from a toxic work environment, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise 🌟. Here are a few things to consider and possible solutions:
-
Qualifying for Unemployment: It really depends on the state you are in and the specific circumstances of your termination. In some cases, being fired after giving notice could still make you eligible for unemployment benefits. It might be worth looking into the details in your state to see if you qualify.
-
Document Everything: Keep records of any conversations, emails, or incidents that might support your case for unemployment benefits. Having a paper trail can be really helpful if you need to dispute the termination or explain the circumstances to the unemployment office.
- Focus on the Future: It’s great that you have a new job lined up and some time off to prepare for your move. Use this time to recharge, get organized, and start fresh at your new job. Leave the negativity behind and look forward to better opportunities ahead.

Some employers have a policy to get folks out ASAP when they decide to leave. It’s mostly to try and prevent theft of product or IP from the company.
Enjoy the paid vacation! That was nice of them, you can file unemployment now
Yep, that’s why if I have another job lined up I don’t give 2 week notice.
I always quit the day before I start my new job.
I say congrats to you. You probably didn’t want ot have to sit there for two weeks, and I think a lot of managers don’t want someone around for too long, so just make it immediate. Win-Win
I think this means you still quit but you were walked. Some companies and some industries want an employee out of the building the second they quit. Distrustful, but not uncommon in sales or industries with sensitive data.
no, you weren’t terminated you quit.
Good riddance to that toxic place. While termination during notice is a grey area, enjoy your well-deserved break. Regarding unemployment, it might be best to reach out to your state’s unemployment office.
I was in a similar situation. A few years back. I was terminated for giving notice to join a union. Joining a union was the only reason why my state saw the termination as unfair (Federally protected activity), and I was allowed to collect a single week of UI. It was to cover my notice period.
The answer to this question is HEAVILY dependent not only on state law, but the conditions under which you resigned.
Edit: Clarity
Yes, you should definitely file for unemployment. Thank your old employer for this paid time off.
