Hey everyone, I need to share what happened to me recently and get some advice.
So, on Sunday night, I received a horrifying death and rape threat from a caller while working at a crisis line job. Fast forward to today, and I got fired. It’s been a rough time, to say the least.
Here are some key points I want to highlight:
– The job paid $21 per hour with no benefits
– Dealing with abusive callers took a toll on my mental health
– Vibrant, the company behind the crisis line, seemed more concerned about government contracts than counselor safety
– They only offered one hour of group counseling per month for counselors dealing with trauma
I believe there needs to be better support and protection for crisis line counselors. Here are some potential solutions that I think could be beneficial for others in similar situations:
– Implementing better security measures for counselors
– Providing more comprehensive mental health resources and support
– Creating a safer work environment with zero tolerance for abuse from callers
Has anyone else experienced something similar or have any advice to share? Let’s start a conversation and support each other in finding solutions. Thank you for listening. 🌟 #SupportEachOther #CounselorSupport
Wow this is so messed up. I’m so sorry
We can’t have any nice things
Wow I wouldn’t have lasted a day doing that job, I’m glad you’re free of that place.
Wtf. I’m so sorry. I used to answer line phone calls at a domestic violence shelter as a volunteer. It was really hard. I can’t imagine being threatened.
Why were you fired??
I’m not trying to be mean but it seems like something is being left out here. Did you yell at the guy and cuss him out in return for this comment? Did you violate some way of counseling like telling him to kill himself or something? Is there some SOP on how you are supposed to handle this? Did they train you on it?
It sucks dealing with people like this and some can really try to get under your skin. It feels very personal but you have to maintain a professional demeanor.
Corporate fucksticks kill everything they touch.
It can only get better in pay in the future, make that starting pay your initial and try to find ways to grow from there
Why did they fire you?
Do you have whistleblower protection in your jurisdiction? It sounds like you reported a hazard. The timing of the reporting and your termination may be enough to win a case.
Also: I’m so sorry. ((Hugs)). I talk to a lot of people in crisis, but not “urgent right now crisis”. I’ve only received veiled threats, and my employer is sincere about their “zero tolerance” for that kind of thing. They seem genuine in wanting to support us. We get more suicidal clients than violent ones, though. Anyway, without knowing exactly how you feel, I have enough context to understand, and I feel with you!
If you can, try to reframe this as an opportunity rather than a threat. What have they freed you from, and what awesome thing comes next?
I had a scam caller call my job one night, and i knew it was one before I even answered. He gave him the run around for a bit before calling him out for being bad at scamming. He said something about f-ing and killing my mother.
Is your child receiving survivor benefits for the deceased parent? If not, check into it, maybe it can alleviate some of the financial stress. I’m so sorry you’re in this situation.
Hey there. I am glad you are out of there. You can find another job but you can’t find another brain. Go enjoy a little bit of time with your daughter and just breathe. Get some legal advice once you give a nice hug to your little one!
