Hey there! So, you’ve found yourself in a situation where you want to surprise your boyfriend on Valentine’s Day by playing video games with him, but you have zero experience in the gaming world. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this article, we’ll provide you with some valuable advice on how to navigate this new territory and some game suggestions that are perfect for beginners like yourself.
Choosing the Right PSN Card Value
When it comes to deciding which PSN card to get for your boyfriend, it’s important to consider how much he typically spends on games and other content from the PlayStation Store. Here are some factors to keep in mind when choosing the value of the PSN card:
1. Consider His Gaming Habits: Take note of how often your boyfriend makes purchases on the PlayStation Store. If he frequently buys games or in-game content, you might want to opt for a higher value PSN card to accommodate his gaming expenses.
2. Budget-Friendly Options: If you’re on a budget, there’s no need to break the bank. You can choose a mid-range PSN card value that allows him to make a few purchases without overspending.
3. Personalize the Value: If you’re unsure of his gaming habits, consider choosing a PSN card with a value that aligns with your budget and the level of surprise you want to present to him on Valentine’s Day.
Beginner-Friendly Game Suggestions
Now, let’s dive into some beginner-friendly game suggestions that you can enjoy with your boyfriend on Valentine’s Day. Since you’re new to gaming, it’s essential to select games that are easy to pick up and play without feeling overwhelmed. Here are some great options to consider:
1. Overcooked 2: If you and your boyfriend enjoy teamwork and friendly competition, Overcooked 2 is the perfect game to bond over. In this cooking simulation game, you’ll work together to prepare and serve meals in a chaotic kitchen environment. It’s a lighthearted and fun game that doesn’t require complex gaming skills.
2. Minecraft: Known for its creativity and open-world exploration, Minecraft is an excellent choice for beginners. You can build, explore, and embark on imaginative adventures together in a relaxing and low-pressure gaming environment.
3. Untitled Goose Game: Embrace your mischievous side with Untitled Goose Game, where you play as a mischievous goose causing mayhem in a charming village. This game is easy to understand and offers a playful experience that’s sure to make you both laugh.
4. Rocket League: If you’re interested in trying out a sports-based game, Rocket League combines soccer with rocket-powered cars for an exhilarating and accessible multiplayer experience. It’s a great way to bond over friendly competition and teamwork.

Untitled goose game, lego [insert franchise].
It Takes Two
Peggle!
Honestly it’s going to depend on what games he likes… and also on what you like (which is going to be harder to measure)
Anything competitive is gonna be off the table (which is a good amount of ps5 multiplayer games), so co-op gaming is ideal. Even then, jumping straight into a co-op shooter might be a bit of a challenge for a single day of gaming. As someone else mentioned, it takes two is probably a fair game, you might not be perfectly adept at it, but it’s not going to be a game with him playing and you just tagging along.
Even then, if he suggests you play something solo, do give it a go and try to not get frustrated if he starts trying to backseat too hard lol. Just keep in mind he’s had years longer to learn the usual patterns of games and that should hopefully ward off any frustration. And he might just want to see you attempt something way too difficult for the fun of it lol. Be prepared to take that on the chin.
Longer term, do see if you can find out if and what sort of games you like, cus the same way you want to do this for him, he’s probably going to love sharing his hobby and being able to play something you enjoy too.
Stardew Valley, though you should play that on PC. System requirements aren’t high at all though; you can play it on a non-gaming PC.
My partner loves the Guacamelee games. She gets to mash buttons in combat and can take a break or serve as a checkpoint on the few very difficult platforming parts. In addition the games are pretty funny which certainly helps.
I’m gonna say this until someone actually tries it: Return of the Obra Dinn.
It’s a murder mystery game on an old wooden ship in the 1800s. A ship washes ashore and your job is to go aboard and find out why the entire crew is missing.
It’s VERY slow paced, so not knowing the controller will never be a problem. Only one person holds a controller but the thing is that pushing the buttons isn’t “the game”. The game is drawing conclusions from clues and piecing it all together in your head, which is GREAT fun with a friend. My wife and I did this together and despite it not being a “cooperative” game it’s probably one of my favorite cooperative gaming experiences.
Goat Simulator
Sackboy a big adventure. The earlier levels are easy enough that my 5 year old could make it through them without much trouble playing together. It’s easier than It’s Take Two as she found that one overly frustrating.
My wife just started playing with me! We started on the Switch and then moved to PS5. If you have access to a Switch then I highly recommend Mario Wonder and then Mario 3D World for a transition to 3D gaming.
On the PS5, one of her favorites was Sackboy: A Big Adventure. It was so fun and an easy game that controls the camera for you and doesn’t over-prioritize any specific player. Also allows you to be carried to him if need be so you’re never stuck. The levels allowed for both easier routes and trickier routes so its fun for a wide range of abilities
She ended up liking games enough to start playing on her own. These are her favorites if it helps! Good luck!
Mario Odyssey
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Mario 3D World
GTA V
RDR2
TLOU Part 1
Inside
Far Cry 5
Mario Wonder
Cod MW 2019
Cold War
Castle crashes. I’ve had great times with friends. It’s really simple yet really rewarding
Portal 2 has a really great multiplayer option. You’re together, there’s no rush, you’re talking and working together. And it’s insanely fun.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Streets of Rage 4
Teenager Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredders Revenge
Possibly Rayman Legends?
Stardew Valley
Lovers in a dangerous space time
Human Fall Flat
Dark souls
The biggest hurdle for most new gamers I’ve seen is finessing the camera and moving at the same time. It’s not super hard but each game does it differently. Download a Bethesda game, fallout or elder scrolls and practice running around. You can do 1st or 3rd person camera to practice either.
Stardew valley and untitled goose game are easy for people with 0 experience. Like my wife. She took the controller and played goose for a couple hours
overcooked is super simple, fun, and it requires team work so it’s funny/fun to yell at eachother
Stardew Valley, it has simple mechanics, very good story and lots of game time!
Vampire Survivors has the simplest gameplay mechanics imaginable yet gets surprisingly deep. Graphics are simple and game with all DLC is <$10
Portal 2 co-op
Survival games like core keeper and valheim can be done at your own pace. And the difficulty can be adjusted to make it easier. Plus you can build houses and castles together
It takes two
Gang beasts. You’re both gonna be equally bad at it.
Key We. You play as kiwis mailing letters by doing tasks. You have to work together and it can be hectic but fun. Here is the [trailer](https://youtu.be/XrPkCaF5wVk?si=nWEMXdYowS4JUFOF).
Overcooked?
Kingdom two crowns,. The only controls are directional and a single button press for certain ‘spevial’ mounts. The music is serene and 10/10 it’s splitscreen, it has quiet moments and spots of panic, it’s hells fun and super cheap – currently playing it again with my partner.
the Trine series is a good pick for a beginner gamer, really fun my missus enjoyed the puzzles.
it takes two – amazing story and gameplay, missus struggles with moving in a 3d space and smashed this game no problem
portal 2 – coop is a ball of fun
castle crashersovercookedmoving outthe lego games, all brill coop experiences.goat simulators a good laughif you wanna try shooting give left for dead/ back for blood a go maybe or to train you up on shooting games, setup a lobby in any COD thats you and your partner vs 10 easy bots, can be a laugh when your new to gaming 🙂
Portal knights is a cheap and cheerful play, similar to minecraft but a bit more linear and less open
Overcooked 2, you need to work together to make meals. The controls are so simple that the two of you can actually play it with a single controller. It’s on sale on PC, like 5 euros, might be on PS too
Any Pokémon Game for the Switch.
Stay off of shooter games, puzzle games are really nice, portal 2?
A way out
My wife had a lot of fun with the LEGO titles while learning gaming, and those are coop.
