Mechatronics, automation, AI
Everyone is going to college these days.
Trades/construction and sales probably have better job prospects.
Apparently engineering jobs have 500 applicants for one job lol.
AI Programming
Artificial intelligence 🤯
Package handler
Trades. All those degrees are great but someone has to build and maintain those buildings people are working in. I don’t use my degree in Hospital Administration anymore since I became an electrician. I make damn good money and I never worry about not working….booming now that everything is going all electric.
Accounting isn’t booming per se but there’s a decline of accounting grads which means there’s going to be a lot of demand in the future
Sales
Accounting
You should probably focus on something you’re actually passionate about and enjoy, not just where the money will be. If you’re good enough and have the work ethic, the money will come. But have a think about what actually motivates you.
Learn how to fix these highly technical teslas, EV’s and hybrid cars
Skilled tradesmen. Welding, electrician, custom carpenters
Honestly still nursing field and teaching. Someone will always have to watch the kids and someone will always have to take care of the elders/patients.

Plus there’s a good spread of those two so you can pretty much live wherever you want.
Content Strategy/Information Architecture & Customer Experience are two fields of growing recognition in the past decade.
AI is going to be a tool that supports both heavily, most likely, but maintaining the backend content system of AI and ensuring all the information is up to date and relevant for the customer in a way that resonates with what they need to solve for and properly identifies the root cause of their issues is a challenge that I don’t foresee AI fixing anytime soon. There are too many human factors involved for that to be the case between creating relevant content, maintaining and keeping that content up to date, and making sure it’s applied in an appropriate fashion, and that companies are talking and describing things in the same way the customer is. It’s not like you can just upload working docs of the content you want to post, it being so public means a legal rep would need to go through it to make sure you’re not revealing anything company secret on accident or in a way that the system can accidentally phrase in a way that makes the company legally culpable for something.
AI’s also going to only be helpful to the most literate who can input their questions or situation coherently in a way that a computer can understand based on previous patterns. One in five American adults are functionally illiterate, so a content system that 20% of the population can’t interact with is going to be an ongoing challenge we’ll need to solve until that gap is closed, less you lose that chunk of customers altogether. And that’s not even touching on specific dialects of english or english being someone’s second or third language.
Affordable housing and anything having to do with senior care.
If you go into economics, you can get into insurance/reinsurance …. Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial, Data, etc. They pay well, and they are niche. I would say alongside your undergrad look up the institute courses look at getting an AINS, ARE, ARM, AIDA or CPCU Cert.
Don’t discount risk management, private banking, sales & trading for your case.
To answer your question though, I think anything healthcare related and system/hardware maintenance related. You still need humans to service the automation/AI machines.
Anything with data
Psychiatry related to tech addiction in youth
Tech sales will continue to grow and stay lucrative, automation, cyber security will grow and branch out in interesting ways (eg detecting AI)
Yo you are so incredibly far from needing to worry about these types of questions. Economics teaches you how to think. It’s massively useful. Get through the tactical aspects and you’ll gain a deep appreciation for the field. Check out Russ Robert’s EconTalk podcast.
Just get decent grades and work hard to get a good first job. Everything else will fall into place. Your interests will change.
Suicide Booth Manufacturing
I was about to say compliance and then I read your post and it clicked! It may not pay as much or is not cool, but compliance is severely needed as there are more and more rules in the financial sector. You still need to pay your dues to get licensed (7,63,65,66,etc), but once you do you can make decent money. Also you could look into the business analyst route. Also a lot of compliance stuff is in second tier cities, you you can actually live and not pay as much for an apartment in NJ or NYC. I just have a BBA and I am starting to come into decent money. Only downside is you may need to move around and the West Coast (outside maybe Denver and Phoenix) is weak for this field. Hope that helps!
I’ve worked as an engineer for 8 years, most jobs are still 35-45/hr. A lot of construction trades/government positions are 50+.
Drug and gambling addiction counselors.
Statistics/Biostatistics
You should study farming or finish your Econ degree and become an ecological economist.
Boomers are getting older. They will need services.
Medicine and aged care… people living longer, with more disposable incomes and expect quality of life in their retirement – while overall we see more diseases of the elderly like cancers and heart disease.
Cyber security. Everyone is getting hacked
Electrical Engineer, then get a job working in power generation, then pick your next step. You could go back to school for an MBA, or do more of a sales or field technician thing.
Renewables and/or clean power are absolutely going to create dramatic change all over the world. Electrification of the vehicle fleets by itself will guarantee a lifetime of work.
Still gonna need teachers. No one will want to but the demand will exist
Honestly, you should go wherever your natural talents and interests take you.
Going into a field just because of the money will have you depressed.
Why did you choose Econ ? You haven’t even finished your first semester. Don’t eliminate your other options so early.
No one knows what the next 5 – 10 years will look like. That’s why you should sharpen your natural talents and skills.
I have a math degree. I thought I was going to be a professor…LOL. Anyway, that math degree trained to be a problem solver. It taught me that there’s more than one way to solve a problem. It taught me to be okay with mistakes and failing. You’d be surprised at the amount of people who have trouble with this, btw.
I found myself in accounting, learned a particular niche and took advantage of opportunities. I’m now a systems analyst that supports many functions/departments making six figures. Did I get here over night? No. I did what I enjoyed and the money/opportunities presented themselves. I’ve been out of school for 12 years now.
Anything where you have to be present in a place and handle something with your hands.
I know the railroad I’m working for is hiring like crazy right now , 2021 I was the ONLY new hire for the entire year , now I’ve got almost 20 new hires below me on the seniority roster .
There’s gonna be a LOT of retirements coming up in the next 5-10 years , so they’re gonna have to backfill all those engineer spots but in order to send conductors to engine school they’ve got to hire a whole mess of conductors .
I think the industry as a whole is in for a rude awakening coz if they don’t change their work culture they’ll be hard pressed to attract new talent that will actually stick around for the long haul , honestly it’d be easier for them to just throw money at the problem and pay a shitload more 🤷♀️
Emergency management and recovery. Lots of weather related disasters due to climate change will require preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
Decommissioning jobs on oil rigs 💰💰💰
Trades like electrical, hvac, or plumbing
Just got any career you choose if you augment it with management, management structure, your set. You can also augment with financials. Engineering psychology but one of the biggest fields out there is ergonomic psychology also known as industrial psychology that measures the metrics of new job positions and also The structure of hell larger and medium size businesses work with their employees and management. Lotta people are going to tell you AI and programming yes that’s there but you gotta be a special nut to want to do that the rest of your life.
