Understanding of what ??? What is “it field” ? Oh my god
I would say learn html, css and JS.
Shift from a consumer mindset to a builder mindset, meaning, for example, instead of using a consumer router in your home network, build your own router and firewall from scratch. That alone is a huge undertaking and will teach you a lot about networks.
Troubleshoot everything, don’t ignore error messages or subpar configuration. Troubleshoot at different layers (e.g., googling error identification codes to sniffing network traffic to see what is out of ordinary) until you find the root cause.
Document and know what to document. Documenting everything is inefficient use of time, instead focus on what you are more likely to forget and also more likely to reuse in the future. Be okay with eventually forgetting everything. You are essentially like a mage in D&D, you have limited spell slots (i.e., active skillset) and after you stop using them for a while you will forget and your notes will allow you to memorize your spells/skills again.
Tools, coding languages, studying for a certification is fine and dandy if looking for a government contacting job but really just how a computer works, file types, looking up terms associated with computing such as active directory, privileged users etc
When I started learning in depth, my conspectus quickly started gaining hundreds of different topics
Wargame
Set up a linux partition and learn how to use it. And I don’t mean the GUI, learn to use the command line for everything.
Then go on youtube to jeremy’s it lab and watch his series on CCNA. Make sure you do the labs in packet tracer. It’s free.
Drop the gaming and tinkering with your computer. I have been building my own rigs for 20 years. None of that is getting you a job.
You need to get educated and certified on what you are interested in doing in IT. It is a big field with many different Job Roles.
Download VirtualBox and start playing around with other OS’.. namely Linux, experiment with different Distros.. Play around and familiarize yourself with SQL and ESPECIALLY Excel, as it opens a lot of doors when it comes to Data and Developing.. Cisco has a lot of free training and even a free certification program (CCST) good if you want to get the basics of Networking, which is usually necessary if you want to advance to better higher paying jobs than “Help Desk”…
Also you mentioned you play video games.. start Cheating, Modding, Scripting, and breaking your Games on the PC.. Stuff like that can bleed well into the worlds of Software Development and Security..
HackTheBox Academy is a good tool its Free, but if you really want to dig into that stuff you will eventually have to pay..

Disable all your ad blocks, antivirus, anti-malware, ect. Then start visiting sketchy websites. You really learn a lot about how PC’s work and how to fix them when they’re FUBAR with viruses =)
Wireshark. Start learning about the traffic on your network.
