that people who are really fit looking also know the most about fitness.
There is a TON of misinformation in the fitness world. Like, an insane amount.
“You need to drink x cups of water per day”
No, you just need to stay hydrated. Use the colour of your pee and your thirst levels to properly moderate your hydration levels.
The not eating after 18:00 thing
That raw dairy and raw meat is bad….not necessarily….it depends on sources
Myth:
Running or exercising alone will make you healthy.
Reality:
Understanding nutrition combined with moderate exercise makes you healthy.
Being jacked doesnโt mean youโre automatically healthy, those guys eat way too much saturated fat and cholesterol on top of PEDS. They might look decent on the outside but their arteries, and organs are fucking crying.
People who think carbs are inherently bad, but can’t actually tell you what foods have carbs in them other than “white foods like potatoes, rice, bread, and pasta!”… that kills me, lol
That you have to only eat chicken broccoli and rice if you want to get in shape.
That counting calories will lead to disordered eating/EDs. Maybe for some people, but not for everyone. A coworker of mine accused me of having an ED because she saw me logging my lunch.
A pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat. That’s not how pounds work. They’re a fixed measure
You can be fat and healthy
That diet has little to do with weight gain/loss
in fact losing weight is about 90% what you put in your mouth
That anything other than your kidneys and liver will remove “toxins’ from your body
If working in physical therapy has taught me anything, itโs that an alarming amount of people have never worked out in their lives and have no idea that muscular soreness is normal after exercising. Also, soreness and pain are not the same thing.
Spot reduction of fat. Except only with surgery.
โYou have to learn to be ok being hungry to lose weight.โย
This is a good way to binge eat your deficit away and develop an unhealthy relationship with food.ย
Eat more protein, more fiber and less sugar and you will feel more satiatedย
Dieting being confused with simply living a healthy lifestyle
That if you can’t do it perfectly, why try?
Nothing is perfect, do it anyway!
That wheelchair =paralysed.
Most are covered here pretty well.
One I can say is that BMI is not as useful for **smaller frame, or larger frame guys**.
No – I am not talking bout guys who are fat, and claim it is all muscle underneath – I am talking about just bigger people.
Also – I am not talking about guys who are jacked and all muscles. Even just a little above average muscles for a bigger guy – will throw off their BMI.
As a big burly guys, even when I was in excellent health (about 16% body fat, working out a lot, good cardio, running regularly, etc.) I was 60lbs over my BMI.
(six foot two, 270lbs – worked out a lot, in great shape).
Due to some common sports (wrestling, highland games, etc.). I hung out with some other big guys – and while yes, some of them were overweight (small gut) – their BMI scales were just laughable.
If you even have slightly bigger than normal shoulders or chest size (again – no not fat or moobs) – your BMI will be off – a lot.
That testosterone is a bad thing and makes you a meat head and that fitness for whatever reason “stops” in your 40’s.
Your Facebook friends enjoy being updated every time you go to the gym.
Everyone feels healthy just because they look fit. Definitely feel stronger and fitter when Iโm a little fluffy.
That it takes a lot of time. People assume by my appearance that I spend 8 hours a day in the gym and the rest counting calories. The reality is, once you have a strong base and understand CICO and a rough idea of your macros, it really doesnโt take up a whole lot of my life. I spend roughly an hour a day in the gym 4-5 days a week and I have not had to actually track calories in years.
* Training abs will remove belly fat locationally
* Never train too hard, if your heart pumps fast and you’re sweaty and short of breath, you might get a heart attack and die any time, from training
That it will cure your depression (I said cure ). It helps yes; and CURE your mental health like a miracle drug.
Strength does not automatically equal fitness or healthy.
“I did an hour of cardio so I can eat pizza’s and chips”
Cardio for an hour doesn’t burn as much calories as people think it does
That frequent, small snacking keeps you stay lean. It โkeeps your metabolism in high gearโ. Every snack actually spikes your insulin and depending on your body and how your metabolic function works, it can gain you weight.
Fad diets, demonizing foods (fat makes you fat, sugar makes you fat, etc), not understanding calories in/calories out, no eating after a certain time, lifting weights is bad for your joints.
That a handful of protocols or diets will change your life. Solid health is a result of a collection of small habits that get repeated often and indefinitely
That fat is bad for you
If your body is fit, you are resistant to viruses
Offsetting bad habits with good ones
โI drink 25 beers on the weekend but I run during the weekโ
โI smoke but lift weightsโ
People confuse things their body is used to with things that are actually healthy/not harmful
If you do things long enough the body will adapt, yes, but possibly at a high cost for your health
“I only sleep 4 hours per night and I feel fine” your body may be used to it but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy for you
Pushing back on BMI.
โI know Iโm big, but it sits in the right placeโ.
Umm ๐ค, diabetes doesnโt skip over a โbody typeโ.
Deadlifting is bad for your back.
That can only be true of you have piss poor form, or youโre lifting way more than you ever have before with no prep beforehand (likely ego lifting). If you actually do it properly, with normal progression, youโll develop back and core muscles that will make you feel bulletproof well in to old age.
That women can gain muscle mass like men can.
So many woman I meet refuse to try strength training because they “don’t want giant muscles”
You can’t.
Eating disorders are so f*cking cool! Body dysmorphia is trendy. Once the disordered behaviors associated with an ED are not outwardly presented the person is โcuredโ.
I could go on RANTS about the toxic views people have related to EDโs.
Semi related to thatโฆ being obese is not โempoweringโ. Youโre dying. Youโre killing yourself. The same way the people who are underweight are. BMI is mostly a joke but we are not meant to carry around an extra 50+ lbs of fat. We donโt need to hibernate. We have access to most things just by driving to the store and buying them. If someone is 50lbs underweight they get put inpatient INVOLUNTARILY if theyโre not dead, why are we rewarding the other side of it then wondering about heart disease rates and how many young adults are having so many chronic health conditions?
Editing to add: I am by no means shaming people who are over or underweight. The problem isnโt solely on the individual, itโs on society for encouraging it. Usually if you canโt gain or lose weight there is a reason. Whether that be physical, mental, or whatever.. where there is a reason, there is some form of solution.
Being fat is healthy. Pro tip: obesity kills millions a year, and those are the lucky ones. The unlucky ones are basically in a constant end of life phase for the latter third of their lives. Which means feeling 85 when youโre 35 but not being old enough to die quite yet, with the same medical and social barriers blocking you.
Ignore looks and dating and all that, itโs irrelevant. Obesity and eating all the fat and salt and sugar you can for โhappinessโ sounds fun and like activism but it is a lie. It is a death cult that will kill you.
And the fun part is your consciousness and โsoulโ will be the first to die, while your body is healthy enough to live longer as you get ostracized, uninvited, and alone. Especially at the end when you need it most.
Thatโs why people donโt get and these 400lb. โactivistsโ.
Fat positivity isnโt psychologically healthy and a way to live, it is a way to die.
And forget just trying to be under 200 lbs. you can be maybe 10lbs over thin to have massive health problems. The human body evolved to be thin and starving, not fat and immobile.
You also need to be constantly exercising. Not for weight, thatโs controlled through diet. Exercise is what will make you feel good and by able to climb a stairwell by 40.
You will end up trapped in a decaying body a very long time. And I assure you, thereโs a special place in hell youโll reside in before you actually die. Youโll start hoping for death.
But it wonโt come. Youโll probably enjoy becoming infirm first.
Look and be however you want. But slurping down salt, fat, and sugar because you want to believe itโs healthy and being a non-beluga whale is somehow supporting the patriarchy is a one way ticket to fuck around and find out town.
Like a couple users already mentioned โthat you need to do cardio and workout to lose weightโ Like if youโre obese losing weight is 99% your calorie intake, just eat less, you can still eat the same junk, just eat less junk and youโll consume less calories and therefore lose weight. Now if you are slightly overweight then workouts + diet are the key (diet is even then more important, workouts will affect only your body recomposition as you lose weight, for example youโll have more muscle while shedding off fat), but if the goal is just the number on the scale then calories in = calories out. Eat less then what you ate thus far and youโll lose weight.
Edit: I know walking/running/any activity helps. I am talking about those people who struggle hard with food and weight to the point they have barely any motivation to do anything. Not people who just went out of shape or need to trim 10kg
I want to loose belly fat.
What exercise I should do to tone my thighs?
Etc.
People donโt realise that fat is not muscle it canโt be targeted.
All fats are bad.
If you want to lose weight, hit the gym.
Especially if you are very overweight, weight loss is 90% nutrition. Starting out with walking more is plenty good enough.
Need to lose weight? Just exercise more.
Healthy at any size.
