🚗🚆🚌 We’ve all been there – sitting in traffic, waiting for the train, or standing on a crowded bus during our daily commute. With our minds free to wander, it’s no surprise that we often find ourselves lost in thought. But what exactly do we think about while commuting? Let’s dive into some common thoughts that people have while travelling to work, school, or wherever their destination may be.
## The Daily Grind: What do you mostly think about while commuting?
### 1. Work-related Stress
– Thoughts of pending deadlines, meetings, and tasks can often flood our minds during the commute.
– How can I tackle that project that’s due next week?
– Did I remember to send that important email?
### 2. Personal To-Do List
– Errands to run, bills to pay, groceries to buy – our personal responsibilities often occupy our thoughts during commutes.
– Don’t forget to schedule that doctor’s appointment!
– I need to pick up milk on the way home.
### 3. Future Plans
– Whether it’s career aspirations or travel goals, many people use their commute time to dream about the future.
– Where will I be in five years?
– I can’t wait for that vacation next month.
### 4. Social Interactions
– From past conversations to future meetups, thoughts about social interactions are common during commutes.
– I should call my friend to catch up this weekend.
– What should I wear to the party on Friday?
### 5. Reflection
– Commuting offers a quiet time for introspection and reflection on past events or decisions.
– Did I handle that situation at work correctly?
– What could I have done differently in that argument?
### 6. Entertainment Choices
– Many people use their commute to plan out what media they’ll consume, such as podcasts, music, or audiobooks.
– I need to download the latest episode of my favorite podcast.
– Should I listen to a new music album or an audiobook today?
### 7. Creative Ideas
– The boredom of commuting can sometimes lead to creative thinking, sparking new ideas or solutions to problems.
– That billboard gave me an idea for a new project at work.
– I should jot down that story idea for a writing project.

If I’m not marco poloing with my friends, normally about my dad ahead, what I’m going to do when I get home, or day dreaming about whatever thing I’m into at the time.
Wondering if there’ll be new knitted hats on the postboxes I pass on the way
Usually I am thinking about getting home to my dogs or what I’m going to make for dinner, but recently I’ve started listening to audiobooks, which I thought I’d hate and not concentrate on, but boy was I wrong. I’ll never go back.
I’m usually listening to music and singing along with songs I like.
I’m not the one driving while I’m commuting so a bit of everything. I’m scrolling on social media, reading some notes for the job, reading a book, watching videos, answering emails, etc.
Commuting is for processing.
I’ll think about what tasks I have from wherever I just was or where I am going. I find commuting relaxing and a great way to process.
WFH has definitely hurt my post work processing.
I’m usually either listening to a podcast or my audiobook so not much else other than that. I guess maybe what I need to do when I get home.
I drive no thoughts head empty on the daily. My commute is about 35ish min and I listen to books. I get so into them I re focus on driving and have to ask myself if I ran any red lights
If i’m going to school i think about what we’re going to do/talk about/learn or whatever and if i go to work i usually wonder what the day will be like. Most of the time it’s just random thoughts floating through my head
I usually listen to audiobooks
On a scale that of 8.5 – 10, how dumb is the BMW next to me going to be today?
“I swear to god if a mf deer jumps out rn I’m gonna be so pissed”
“Please no cops”
“Oh my god could you go any slower”
“It looks so pretty out”
Sometimes I think about the dream I had, or stuff I need to do.
Sometimes I try to organize and plan out the day in my head. other times, I think about if i really locked the front door… if i took the meat out of the freezer.. or I just hear a random song in my head.
Usually, I’m thinking about the jobs I want to apply for, or the jobs I have applied to and didn’t receive an update.
I hope I don’t trip while heading downstairs.
Do I want to get coffee today? How long have I been in traffic for? How many serial killers exist in the world? Did any cold cases get solved this week? Why is the person in front of me slamming on their brakes so much? Do I have to go work today?
Going to work: can’t wait to get on the couch at home
Going home: can’t wait to get on the couch at home.
How unbelievably selfish and dangerous most drivers are and how driving is dangerous even on short distances. Car culture is probably one of the most toxic things out here but we just excuse it. 100+ people die a day on our roads. This is all considered uncontroversial by nearly all people.
So. Many. Things. I have ADD. What do I need to do first when I get to work. That car is a pretty color. Oh, I need to put my lipstick on. Did I take out meat for dinner? Hmm, I wonder where the cat is right now, maybe he’s at the bedroom window. I need to call my husband when I get to the office. That conversation with my mom was interesting last night. I hope I get out of work on time today. What case do I need to check on first when I get there? I should put my lipstick on while the traffic is stopped. This is a good podcast. And I’m only half way there.
its usually just “FUCKING MOVE!” because slow drivers, drivers who cut me off, drivers who dont accelerate through the intersection, drivers who turn at 5 mph, drivers who dont get all the way into the turn lane and stick out, and of course, drivers who get in the way of ambulances
Get. Out. Of. My. Way. 🤣
It would be nice if you just snowed enough to close the whole town.
I swear if this cop try to pull me over , I’m 100 legal go ahead mofo.
This car gonna cut me off just to get to the same red-light .
I just listen to a podcast or music. I usually think about conversations I’ve had, things i want to do in the following days, what I’m going to eat for dinner, etc.
I create stories in my head about other drivers.
I observe and make an effort to remember suspicious cars (model and make) in case they engage in reckless behavior, especially those with no licenses/ potentially stolen vehicles.
I lower the windows to listen to other people’s music and catch a whiff of folks smoking. How I long for the days of smoking while driving!
I crank up Tech Nine’s music and imagine myself as a prosperous gangster in the luxurious fast track lane that my partner pays excessively for!
I have a 1.5 hour commute (due to traffic) Usually goes like this:
zone out, true crime podcast, debate with myself, singing kpop or something loud, curse out crappy drivers, plan out writing, zone out again, was that a cop? It’s fine, probably not… What airplane is that? (I live near a major international airport). Damn helicopters, bet it’s army this time, did I respond to that text from X four days ago? I should call my brother. I need to go to the pharmacy but not today. Speed camera here, fuck I hate driving in X state. I’m hungry. I have a headache. Singing something sad or a ballad. Oh, the tree tipped over. You know, if the HOA gave a damn they would’ve trimmed it back. Oh really, you’re gonna cross in the middle of fucking traffic? Nice. Idiot. Is my cat in the window? Oh he is!
Rinse and repeat.
Conversations I’ve had during the day and overthinking about what I should’ve said instead
On the way in I plan my day, on the way home I decompress.
