Who are some public figures who you’ve gained/lost respect for due to their behavior on social media? Why?
In the age of social media, public figures are under constant scrutiny for their behavior on various platforms. Many individuals have gained or lost respect for public figures based on their social media behavior. In this article, we will discuss some public figures who have either gained or lost respect due to their behavior on social media, and the reasons behind those shifts in public opinion.
**Gained Respect**
1. **Prince Harry and Meghan Markle**: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have gained respect for their use of social media to advocate for important causes such as mental health awareness and gender equality.
2. **Chrissy Teigen**: The model and TV personality has won over many fans through her candid and relatable posts on social media, addressing issues such as body positivity and motherhood.
3. **Lin-Manuel Miranda**: The “Hamilton” creator has used his platform on social media to promote arts education and support various charitable causes, earning him respect from his followers.
**Lost Respect**
1. **Kanye West**: The rapper’s controversial and erratic behavior on social media has led to a decline in respect from many fans and followers.
2. **Roseanne Barr**: The comedian’s racist tweets led to the cancellation of her popular television show and a loss of respect from the public.
3. **Logan Paul**: The YouTube star faced backlash after posting a controversial video from Japan’s “suicide forest,” leading to a significant loss of respect from his audience.
It’s important to note that public figures are held to a higher standard on social media, as their behavior and statements have a significant impact on their followers and the public perception of them.
**Why Does Social Media Behavior Matter?**
Public figures have a unique opportunity to influence and inspire their followers through their social media presence. However, their behavior on these platforms can also have a negative impact on their reputation and public image. As such, it is important for public figures to be mindful of their actions and statements on social media.
**The Power of Authenticity**
In today’s digital age, authenticity is highly valued by social media users. Public figures who use their platforms to share genuine and relatable content often gain respect and admiration from their followers. This authenticity can also help public figures rebuild respect if they have faced criticism for their behavior on social media.
**The Impact of Controversy**
On the flip side, controversial or offensive behavior on social media can quickly lead to a loss of respect from the public. Public figures who make insensitive or offensive remarks on social media often face swift backlash and a decline in their public image.
**Growing Pains: Learning from Mistakes**
In some cases, public figures may make mistakes on social media that lead to a loss of respect. However, how they handle these mistakes can also impact public perception. A genuine apology and a demonstrated effort to learn and grow from their missteps can often help public figures regain respect from their audience.
In conclusion, the behavior of public figures on social media can have a significant impact on the respect and admiration they receive from their followers. It is important for public figures to use their platforms thoughtfully and authentically, and to be mindful of the potential consequences of their actions and statements on social media.

JK Rowling. Her anti trans obsession just disgusts me. I idolized her growing up but now she makes me ill.
I was a big fan of Letitia White until I saw her going off on Twitter about all kinds of anti-vaxxer conspiracies. I haven’t, like, ~cancelled her or anything, but now instead of feeling all “fuck yeah!” when I see her, I want to roll my eyes.
But John Green has garnered so much of my respect for the way he uses social media. Even after Tumblr users harassed and threatened him off the site, he continued making videos with Hank and all that. People were massively cruel to him and I wouldn’t have blamed him a bit if he’d completely withdrawn from the internet, but he’s still here, he’s still going strong, and he’s still so so kind to people.
Anti-semitism and not agreeing with the actions of a country are not the same thing, especially when the country is flagrantly breaking international law.
Yet, there are too many on social media who don’t know this difference. My follow list keeps getting shorter and shorter.
Might be an obvious answer but I used to be completely indifferent to Elon Musk. Now I hope he really does go to Mars and stays there.
Someone else mentioned John Green and he does seem to use his platform well, the problem sometimes I have with people I even like is that when you pick and choose on which causes you want to mention, it can show a lot about someone even when they say nothing.
Gal Gadot and her support for Israel
Devon Sawa was an actor I liked when I was young, had a crush like all the other girls. Nowadays he’s on the down-low but I followed him on Twitter and Instagram and he’s surprisingly wholesome. He’s a recovering alcoholic and he’ll post/share about other people who are recovering. Also I loved following along when he adopted a scared basset hound and slowly she opened up and now she’s more well-adjusted and secure. Of course, also the other random posts of her and his other dogs, and his kids.
On the other end, Jared Padalecki has posted some troubling things. Granted he has mental issues, but he KNOWS the Supernatural fandom is hard core to the point of being scary. So when he’d post about some bad service from a waitress or hotel worker and POST THE PERSON’S PICTURE, that’s just not okay. Those poor people would be hunted down by fans. Jared would take his post down shortly but the damage was done. After a few instances of this, I can’t respect him the same way.
Elon Musk. His behaviour is beyond disappointing.
Neil Degrasse Tyson lost my respect. He said it’s better to hit a dog than to swerve onto a lawn because multiple blades of grass would be hurt vs one dog dying.
He said this because he hates vegans and thinks they are morally wrong. I think preachy vegans are annoying, but most vegans are fine so wtf.
Most politicians
Chris Pine is a breath of fresh air with a hint of chic silver fox. His fashion is on point, he doesn’t look like he smells, doesn’t fucking assault people. The bar is so low isn’t it? Yeah, I’m lookin’ at you Brad Pitt. You disappointed us. Now we have Chris Pine, who is cuter anyway, so won’t want you anymore.
Adam Levine lost all respect from me. He has no respect for his wife and was rightfully exposed. Makes me sad whenever I hear Payphone now.
Lance Bass. During the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial he made a video using recorded audio of Heard’s testimony of dissociating and fixating on the carpet during a period of physical abuse by Depp where Lance was mocking her description and making fun her. When he was called out on it he defended it as just harmless fun with a popular sound clip or something. Absolutely disgusting to mock an abuse victim like that, I lost all respect for him and people who defended him.
Robert Irwin, son of the late and great Steve. His Insta posts are all adorably wholesome: mom, sister and niece, travelling, photography, and wildlife causes he’s passionate for. And his fat pug. He seems so grateful for every opportunity and so humble.
Doja CaT
Kid Rock. I would have been so pissed to go to his concert to be greeted by a video from our former president. Thank goodness I saw videos of his opening before I had an opportunity to go. Idc we have different beliefs, but don’t shove it down my throat.
like more: pedro pascal
like less: jk rowling
m.i.a. the weird alex jones defending antivax stuff, i just cant w her anymore
Rob Schneider. I thought he was a funny dude growing up. Now he’s posts a bunch of red pill propaganda
For myself it would be Kanye west. It was sad to his downfall.
my mom had the biggest crush on Mel Gibson. Even had his picture on her desk. It was quite sad to see her lose respect for him.
MIA because she said there was no need for the Black Lives Matter movement. She doesn’t think the US has a racism problem since there is not overt genocide like the Tamil people experienced
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. I was really disappointed in them for obvious reasons.
Elon Musk and Jk Rowling are obvious answers for me.
Also not just one person but a group, so sick of the creepy unhinged Taylor Swift fans.
I’ve gained a lot of respect for James Vander Beek. His posts are super wholesome and heart centered, and I always come away feeling happier – which is an unusual social media experience!
I lost a lot of respect for anything Will Smith related since the slap. That whole family is messed up from years of being in Hollywood. Will comes across as a huge hyprocrite, and Jada is just a leech sucking any confidence that Will had completely dry.
Gained a lot of respect for Richard Herring. Every international woman’s day he trawls twitter for tweets asking when international men’s day is, and replies to them with the date. The pieces he writes on why are excellent, it’s an excellent support of women and feminism, and he also now uses it to raise money for charity.
Used to think Chris Pratt seemed really cool and wholesome, then found out he’s part of an anti gay super church or something.
Zac Hanson, of the band Hanson. For a band that has a lot of inspiration from historically black styles of music, they were veeery quiet about BLM and such, did not comment on George Floyd, etc. To an extent that’s understandable, they haven’t positioned themselves as a political band.
But then all this stuff leaked from Zac Hanson’s pinterest page and it was all like, really cringey racist, homophobic, gun-toting right-wing memes, and instead of apologising for the parts of it that were offensive, he just kind of doubled down and didn’t take any responsibility or indicate that he regretted it. He would delete comments off Hanson fan forums or instagram etc if people were asking him about it. Just did the opposite of what good PR management would have been. Taylor and Isaac haven’t condemned the views in those memes directly either, though they have both posted kind of generic “We value all people.” type things. It left a bad taste in a lot of fans’ mouths.
John Cusack has gained my respect. He’s very political so it might not be to everyone’s taste.
Still can’t get past his support of Depp though.
Not serious compared to other issues, obviously, but Chris Evans. I’d had a crush on him since I was 11, so for over 18 years. I lost a lot of respect for him in light of his relationship with Alba Baptista. Celebrities dating is fine, I don’t care, same with the age difference. But blatantly lying during multiple interviews when asked pointedly about his relationship goals when he knowingly had a girlfriend for over a year and ogling Keke Palmer on the red carpet for Lightyear while dating said girlfriend put a bad taste in my mouth. He had the opportunity to just not say anything or say that he wanted to keep things private, but lying and saying that he was looking for a wife when he’d been dating her for almost a year at that point was disrespectful to her, imo, and just gross. Lying just really puts me off
Chrissy Teigen
Jason Aldean. Loved his music but now he’s buying tables at Mar a Lago and I just can’t
