When something is universally praised and you don’t understand it, it’s good to understand that you don’t understand.
You may never be able to enjoy it, but hopefully the feedback here will help you learn to see what all those people respect about it. I may never love country music, but I have learned to identify what impacts people about it. And that’s enough for a person to be “educated” on a thing.
If you are comparing them to almost 100 years of content that has been copying their formula and improving on it, they may not seem great.
But if you are comparing them to what else was out there at the time, they are pretty amazing.
Citizen Kane watched through a modern lens, yes is a bit boring and uninteresting to most people (I’ve seen it once and will likely never watch iamt again).
But you need to understand that film basically invented and created filming techniques and styles that had never been used before and are still studied and used to this day. Things like image wipes and certain angles to denote specific feelings. So yeah it paved the way for a lot of cinema that came after it to experiment and do interesting things with the camera.
Citizen Kane was very innovative at the time, and many elements of its cinematography became more or less standard. And Charles Foster Kane is one of the most interesting and complex characters in film history.
And Welles basically did the entire thing himself. Quite a feat.
It’s not the best film ever, but it’s a damn good one.
I suggest you watch Citizen Kane with Roger Ebert’s commentary; it explains why the film is so great and influential. Orson Welles. A ridiculously talented, charismatic genius who never duplicated the masterpiece of his very first film. His first film was Kane. It’s like a student driver winning the Indianapolis 500. Welles continued to make fantastic movies ,(some butchered by the studio post production). As an actor he brought a certain gravitas that was impossible to ignore. In later life he gave in to culinary indulgence and frequently took what he considered to be ridiculous advertising jobs to finance his projects. He could be petty, pompous, and cantankerous. But he was also convivial, charming and generous. He was great in a way that is almost impossible to copy today.
