People are assholes and there are people everywhere. What’s the point of kicking a dog? Yet it happens.
Could be that they were not the intended victim or did not move into the anticipated position where the culprit would have made his move. A lot can change in 40 minutes.
I’m not making a declarative claim here, but my intuition of the situation you’re describing is that some blackout drunk people have trouble accepting responsibility. At least without some sort of toxicology test.
I’ve never known anybody who did this or had this happen to them and I used to live in a drug house and go to bars 4nights a week lol. Not saying it doesn’t happen but I think people put the stories on the internet and it snowballs like crazy.
Bad people do bad things?
It honestly sounds like they ran against an alcohol that just hit harder. Lots of things can cause it. A rich pour, empty stomach, someone buying a round sooner than anticipated. Because you are not expecting to be so drunk, you are not defending against going over the tipping point. And it snowballs.
Or maybe you just have a Chaotic Neutral Rogue in the party with +18 slight of hand, who knows.
It’s incredibly rare.
What *is* common is women losing track of how much they’ve been drinking, or getting more drunk than they intended resulting in embarrassing behavior on their part, which they try to excuse with the “OMG, I was roofied” defense.
You’ll never know by asking this because no one who does it is going to answer.
A thing in some metropolitan areas is guys being targeted by gangs who drig them and take them to cash machines to Rob them.
This was going on over a decade ago in Hong Kong when I lived there.
This is was happening in a city where I used to live. Young men were being drugged in a specific gay bar. When the guy got arrested it made the news.
How do they know that their drinks were spiked and they just didn’t drink too much?
I think it’s became a bit of a trend to say “i got spiked”. It’s funny though that being ’spiked’ always closely resembles the symptoms of overindulgence of alcohol, couple this with the fact that people are drinking quite potent alcohol drinks thinking it won’t have any effect on them. This happens all the time in the UK – young women that have never really drank will go out and chug down three pitchers of venom (vodka whiskey and alcopop) then say they’ve been spiked when they can’t walk after it.
This has been an on-again-off-again problem in my city, and I’ll give you my thoughts on it and experiences with it as they apply to the places that I drink. For reference, I don’t work at a bar, but I am kind of a bar rat who has spent many hours a week in various bars for years.
There seem to be very few people who spike people’s drinks, but the ones who do it are serial drink-spikers who do it to a lot of people (this is my direct answer to your question btw.) There’s almost always a rash of incidents with many people hit in a couple of months. They are often centered around one bar or a few bars in the same geographic area. Cameras are reviewed, a culprit is identified, and the problem stops when they are run off or arrested.
I think that the people who do this have varying motivations. They more often hit women, so I assume many plan on SA. I can only speculate why they hit women who are with friends or boyfriends. Maybe they hope the friends will ditch when they “get too drunk,” maybe they hope they will go outside without friends where they can be snatched up, or maybe they are just assholes and like to ruin women’s nights. And some of them are *definitely* just trying to be assholes. Sometimes they hit men, bartenders, performers/bands, etc.
It’s rare enough that it’s unlikely to happen to you on any given night, but it happens often enough that you should always take precautions and not leave your drink alone (just like you should always wear your seatbelt in the car for example.)
Also, just to address it since I saw it in the comments, there are definitely people who claim someone spiked their drink when it didn’t happen. This comes in two varieties. There are the people who drink way too much, embarrass themselves, and use this as an excuse. And there are people who may have gotten a little drunker than expected at a bar around the time spikings were happening and start telling people that it “might have happened” to them some time after the fact with no real evidence.
Weirdos are everywhere. They walk among us undetected, until we realize why they always seemed just a little…off, in a way.
I work as a bouncer in the UK and whilst people do get spiked it is no way near the amount that gets claimed.
When people have too much to drink it’s way easier to say “oh I got spiked” than “I’m a twat that drank too much and made an ass of myself”.
I’ve dealt with so many girls/guys on the ground throwing up and absolutely fucked, all their friends start going “they’ve barely had anything to drink, they must have been spiked”, only for them to admit 20min later the person is 10+ jagerbombs deep, hasn’t drank in a year and hasn’t eaten anything all day.
That or they have taken a load of Ket because they are retards.
The victim blaming in some of the comments is astounding.
Guys get drugged to. It’s not always for date rape. Sometimes it’s just to rob someone. Allows for easier access to their phone.
Cause rape laws aren’t severe enough.
My boyfriend had this happen to him a few times at the local beach bars. I think they were trying to rob him or make him get a dui…. He was from NY and some local Floridians didn’t like him moving in with his business. We lived so close to the bars that I would just go get him when he went out or I would go and we would get a cab and go get his car the next day. Once he walked home and passed out in the neighbors lawn. I almost had to take him to the hospital. This is after 2 drinks. I have had it done to me and same with a friend… we were with a group also so definitely weren’t getting raped just getting dragged home. But they stole our purses and cell phones… Another one of my friends had it done at a party with a huge group of our friends… and apparently someone put it in her drink just cause they didn’t like her. People are something…
I genuinely couldn’t tell you. The world is full of horrible people and one way the men in that bunch sometimes express their horrible nature is by drugging people, mostly women, to take advantage of.
Just like any other evil thing, it’s not like men just tend towards it and have to be told it’s wrong. No decent person condones a literal crime like that.
I do not know anyone who has ever had their drink spiked, nor spiked a drink. Not a political statement, this is just my experience.
I’m a little surprised this is a trending issue, given the proliferation of sexual assault prevention classes. I would have thought the incidents would be getting fewer, not more common as the word got out.
I got old and haven’t been at parties for a long time. My observation is the date rape drugs of old started to become part of the party drug scene (talking to a set of people about 15 years younger than me). . So before something that was a substance only found with creeps and abusers suddenly became “oh, this stuff is at parties all the time”. It’s a scope creep over time that’s honestly fucked up.
Drinking makes people easy targets for criminals. Combine that with the attitude you can see many of these comments (lol you probably just drank too much xd) and you’ll see that people don’t tend to take victims seriously, compounding that issue.
My mom was on a business trip with a bunch of people. End of the day they decided to stop for a beer after dinner. Outside they caught a dude trying to SA a woman who ran off. They help the lady get a cab and head inside.
They only got 1 round of drinks because it was getting late already and they’re all working in the morning. My mom was their designated driver so she didn’t have a drink. When everyone was about done with their drinks, she noticed the dude from earlier was across the bar with some other dudes just staring at her coworkers and laughing.
Her coworkers had became completely unintelligible. She rushed them to their car and took them back to their hotel where everyone except her threw up all night. The next day nobody else could remember anything that had happened after dinner.
The less you comprehend it, the better person you are by default.
Because some people want to hurt other people. The more you know 💫
Drink spiking *isn’t* a massive problem. It’s a symptom of a larger problem.
You’ll notice a common theme among the links you used to support your claims: They’re all from massive cities/areas with hugely inflated crime rates. Specifically, there’s also *huge* amounts of human trafficking. Spiking drinks is almost always for said crime, and isn’t a large common denominator for sexual assault ([This study seems to suggest](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2645469/) about 21% of sexual assaults are consider drug-facilitated, which can also mean many more things than just spiking a drink).
And realistically, this is a next to impossible thing to actually police. People don’t want the government in on their private lives, and if they won’t bring a drink testing kit with them then they can’t expect the bar to be able to provide one. Another commenter also pointed out the concept of minesweeping. Sometimes people spike their own drinks for some extra fun. Sometimes it’s too much, and when they start showing signs of a drugged out individual, women and staff will likely be quick to call police or medical, or at least test that person’s drink themselves. The natural conclusion would be that she was drugged by someone else. Considering having and using said drug to yourself like that would still be illegal, it’s usually in those people’s best interests to keep the lie going. As long as they never bring up who really did it (and how would they actually know anyway), nobody else is harmed other than some women’s fear for their own safety.
What needs to be happening is a stronger border control presence in the Southern United States. I don’t much care about any discussion about immigration, but the border is where the cartel (and many other central American based gangs) enter through to do things in our country. Human trafficking is not really a one person job, and so targeting organized crime is going to be the best bet for reducing said crimes to individuals. As of right now, our Southern borders are barely *watched,* let alone actually defended.
I hate to be that guy that brings up the politics of it, and I promise I’m not generally like that. But the reality is stronger borders in the South would curtail a lot of these issues. It’s a much smarter idea to prevent drink spiking from ever happening, rather than simply finding those who do it and punishing them.
It’s been a problem for ages, I was spiked in a pub back home ages ago. I was The Designated Driver so was on the soft drinks all night then my mates had to pick me up off the floor and get us home. It was some twink and and his hag, small town but I can’t remember much more than that.
Why? Easy, some one wants to take advantage of someone else. Should be an easy conclusion to reach bud.
I would bet it’s just some psychopath shit that the rest of us will never understand.
I’ve never understood this. I’ve lived many years on this planet and met many men and never have I ever met one who would even vaguely contemplate spiking a drink.
Who are these men? There must be a tiny percentage of men who spend every night just spiking drinks. Can we find these men and just end them?
My bfs drink got spiked by his friends and he got really depressed and suicidal I was so worried for his safety and angry at his so called friends who left him alone to handle it. Suffice to say they aren’t friends anymore.
A girl was jealous of her co-worker’s promotion, so she set it up so the co-worker would seem like a insane drunk by spiking her drink. Fortunately it was called out.
Another case of a couple where the guy was about to get spiked so they could lead him away and kidnap the lady.
People can be assholes for any number of reasons. Protect your drinks.
When I was bouncing one of the barmaid’s caught a guy spiking some girls drink. She didn’t say anything to either one of them but before the woman could drink it she took the woman’s drink set it under the counter and replaced it with a new one. She had me pull the video surveillance tape and call the police. After they view the video tape they arrested him and took the drink into evidence. It was laced with Rohypnol . They were able to tie him to several other incidences in the area. He was convicted of multiple charges including four counts of sexual assault.
I had an attractive problematically attractive gf in HS/College.
One time I went to visit her. We were lil gremlins using her looks to get me free alcohol.
So she gets into a frat party and I was 20 people behind her on the line cuz I’m a guy. I get in and she gave me the look as in I got you a drink, you can come over now. And I saw them hand her a blue drink. I drank it, and the only thing that made not a medical emergency is my anxiety pills are Xanax so being able to navigate alprazolam… flunitrazepam didn’t knock me out, just gave me a desire to go to the medical aid office in the coming days. Where a tested positive for rohypnol
