#RecruiterFail #JobSearch #InterviewRejection #LinkedInRecruiter
Hey everyone! So I had an interesting experience recently and I wanted to get your thoughts on it. 🤔
A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn about a job opportunity that seemed like a perfect fit for my experience and skills. I applied right away and even messaged her back to let her know. But guess what? I got a rejection letter without even a single interview. Talk about a letdown! 😕
It’s like being told you’re being asked out on a date only to be ghosted at the last minute. 🙄
Has this ever happened to you? How did you handle it? Any tips or advice on how to avoid situations like this in the future? Let’s discuss and support each other in navigating the ups and downs of the job search process! 🌟🙌
Possible Solutions:
– Reach out to the recruiter for feedback on why your application was rejected
– Keep networking and applying to other opportunities
– Brush up on your interview skills and polish your resume and cover letter for future applications
> While it’s certainly possible that they got a bunch of applications from people who were more qualified,
It’s possible but even recruiters here don’t give a clear answer on what makes a resume ‘qualified.’ I’ve seen countless videos and essays that end up having inconclusive results. There’s no universal standard to a resume. Hell, someone new is joining my team at my job and my boss showed their resume in an email. The resume was absolutely horrendous looking!
> I’m not even really looking for a job lol
That’s fortunate and I encourage/empower you to push back to any kind of nonsense. This goes for anyone not really looking for a job.
Quotas need to be met.
There was someone another sub recently that was mistakenly rejected by the autoscreen. Have you reached back out to the recruiter to confirm?
At least you got a rejection letter. I’ve gotten recruiters reach out to me, let me know I’m perfect, encourage me to apply, and then I never hear from either of them again.
Recruiters reach out to whoever they think is a good fit. Then it goes over to the hiring manager / team to have a look at your profile since they’re the ones to make the decision in the end.
It sucks I know.
Recruiter had to present 10 CVs of qualified people to the hiring manager. She had only 7-8 qualified candidates, so she cold called a few people via LinkedIn. Got another 5-6 CVs, so she had 12-14 CVs. Had to drop 2-4 of those.
If the rejection email was very general, it may still make sense to get it confirmed by the recruiter as mistakes happen.
Recruiter, in fact, has no say in hiring. They can bring resumes and offer someone with an authority to choose to talk to a candidate. That’s it. Might be something changed in their requirements, and the recruiter wasn’t told, or manager just said “Nah, I don’t like them”, or “We decided to hire my baby brother, position closed”.
Scenario 1. The recruiter didn’t recognize your name, and your resume looks different than your LI profile
Scenario 2. Another recruiter / team member rejected your application, not knowing that someone already reached out to you
Scenario 3. The recruiter reached out to a bunch of people on LI when they got the requisition on their desk, but following a discussion with the hiring manager, they are looking for something a little different and you no longer fit the bill.
Scenario 4. The recruiter reached out to you, and subsequently shared your application with the hiring manager, the hiring manager didn’t like the profile and said they didn’t want you to be screened.
Scenario 5. Reallocation of budget, and the role is no longer a priority, or is getting pulled altogether
Scenario 6, the recruiter has a dumbass KPI that says they have to source a certain number of people for each role
A bunch of reasons that have literally nothing to do with you, your skills or your abilities, don’t take it personally
What a dumb Recruiter! 🤦
Getting a rejection after being personally encouraged by a recruiter is like being invited to a party only to be turned away at the door—what’s up with that? Maybe their “ideal fit” suddenly changed overnight
I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. She reached out on LinkedIn and encouraged me to apply, I did. Then a few weeks later, I get an email from her (it sounded automated, but not sure) saying I was not selected for the an interview.
But I mean, I’ve been reached out to and then ghosted by recruiters many a time, so this isn’t anything new to me.
I’d be reaching out to the recruiter to give them a lot of shit for this.
The recruiter made his/her numbers; that’s all that matters.
The same call was made to 1,000 other people
It’s all about the numbers
So they used you to meet their phone calls quota.
I had the same thing recently for a job in anime (I have 15 years of experience in anime, video games, board games so very niche). Sent in a cover letter and a resume for both marketing positions, had a meeting with the recruiter and was even told specifically I’d have an interview next week. Nothing. Then when I follow up I got a denial without an interview because I didn’t align with the company. I’ve pretty much given up.
I am an internal recruiter and I don’t have any quotas or anything but sometimes if we are looking for a niche skill set and I do end up having to message a few people on LinkedIn that look like a possible fit. Unfortunately, I can only refer to the hiring manager and hope they decide to interview. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t for a variety of reasons. It sucks and it makes me hate reaching out to candidates on LinkedIn because I feel terrible when it happens. I follow up with candidates directly on LinkedIn to let them know but sometimes the ATS sends an auto rejection. It could be something like that and I’m sorry that happened to you! It wouldn’t hurt to reach out to the recruiter and see what happened though!
Yeah, happened to me too. Were they direct or third party?
