π©Έπ Will people still get their period while in a coma? π©Έπ
If a person is in a coma, the brain is in a state of unconsciousness and does not respond to external stimuli. This raises the question of whether bodily functions, such as menstruation in females, continue as usual during this time. Let’s explore this topic in more detail.
## What Happens to Menstruation During a Coma?
During a coma, the body is in a state of prolonged unconsciousness, which may raise questions about how menstrual cycles are affected. Here are some key points to consider:
1. **Hormonal Regulation:**
– The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
– Even in a coma, the body continues to produce these hormones, maintaining the menstrual cycle.
2. **Menstrual Flow:**
– Women in a coma may still experience menstrual bleeding.
– This is due to the normal shedding of the uterine lining, regardless of the level of consciousness.
3. **Care and Hygiene:**
– It is important for healthcare providers to address the menstrual needs of coma patients, including providing appropriate hygiene and care during menstruation.
## Managing Menstruation for Coma Patients
The continuation of menstrual cycles in coma patients brings about the need for proper management of menstruation. Here’s how healthcare providers address this issue:
### Medical Care:
1. **Monitoring and Evaluation:**
– Healthcare providers monitor the menstrual cycle of coma patients to ensure that it remains within normal parameters.
– Any irregularities are promptly addressed to prevent potential complications.
2. **Hygiene and Comfort:**
– Proper hygiene practices are followed to ensure the comfort and well-being of coma patients during menstruation.
– Specialized care may be provided to accommodate the unique needs of patients in this state.
### Emotional Support:
1. **Understanding and Compassion:**
– Coma patients may experience emotional distress related to their menstrual cycle.
– Healthcare providers offer understanding and compassion to address any concerns or fears during this time.
2. **Patient Advocacy:**
– Advocates may work with healthcare teams to ensure that the menstrual needs of coma patients are met with sensitivity and respect.
## Conclusion
In conclusion, menstruation continues to occur in women while they are in a coma. This is due to the ongoing hormonal regulation and physiological processes of the menstrual cycle. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in managing menstrual needs for coma patients, ensuring proper care, hygiene, and emotional support during this time. It is important to recognize the continued bodily functions in coma patients and provide appropriate care to address their unique needs.
Yes. Most do.
Some women have been raped and impregnated while comatose, too.
I work with patients in a coma. Yes they do! Unless theyβre someone with brain injury
Yes.
Yes. A period is a biological function and not one that women have conscious control over.
I asked my wife who is a nurse and she said it happens and it’s noted in their chart about when it will probably happen and there is a procedure for handling it.
One patient that we had was put on the Depo-Provera shot and for her it stopped her period.
Yep
People lol
Do people still shit and piss when in a coma?
Yes.
Do they still sweat? Yes.
Contrary to what you may believe, menstruation is not a voluntary process.
Yeah being awake makes no difference ladyβs can start in their sleep just ask my wife about the sheets lol
If people can get pregnant, in a coma, I am pretty sure people can have their periods in a coma.
Yes! It doesnβt really phase us. Usually in the hospital, we keep an absorbent pad, like a puppy pad, under patients when theyβre not able to perform their own toileting. This also catches period blood! Some nurses will also put a sani pad between the patientβs legs to catch the blood, but Iβve never been a fan of that method. Itβs beneficial because it keeps the moisture off the skin better, but it makes it more difficult to tell if the patient has urinated or pooped. Either way, we always ensure that the patient stays clean and dry as much as possible, and we make sure to increase the frequency of cleaning their genitals and bottom during menstruation!
That is a good question, thank you for asking.
Idk but my guess is yes since sexual assault of an unconscious woman still results in a pregnancy
Yes.
Depending on the cause of the coma (like a lot of physical damage) their bodies will have a stress reaction where they bleed for a longer time, or they donβt bleed at all. This is on the more uncommon side.
I only know this because it was procedure for them to chart it when my friend was in a coma, and her mom was worried she had internal damage to her reproductive organs during the car crash because her period lasted two weeks and the next months zilch.
She didnβt, thankfully. It was just her body being all over the place.
Statistically, about half of people
Yes and poop and pee and slobber. All the bodily functions
Not directly related to the question, but fill out your advanced directives, people! If you donβt want to be tubed and lubed for decades, say so. Let your family know too. If you donβt want to waste away for decades in a long term care facility, gotta have paperwork for that. Just sayin!
Yes. There have been several cases of coma patients having babies.
Maybe… unless you impregnate them?
Yes and they can get pregnant while in the coma too.
Yes. There is at least one story of a male nurse getting a coma patient pregnant.
Isn’t that like asking of people still poop when they are in a coma?
ICU Nurse here
Yep, you do! Itβs just handled like any other bodily waste and the patient is kept clean and dry with an incontinence pad etc.
You can also labour and deliver a baby while in a come also
Unfortunately I know that people still get their period because I’ve heard of coma patients becoming pregnant because someone raped them. Sick world we live in
Yeah, shit, piss, respirate, fart, get woodies, all the things you do when you’re sleeping, they’re not dead…..yet.
Only if the person in a coma has a uterus and ovaries and is between the ages of menarche and menopause.
Well… If you’re raped while you are in a coma, you can get pregnant (there was a court case about that a few years ago).
Considering this… What do you think???
Women. Will women get their periods. Men don’t have periods. It’s literally a defining characteristic of the female sex
Yes. We just stick a pad there or let them free bleed onto a chux
Yes it can.
I used to work in a school with special needs children-some were very severely brain damaged, many parents opted for birth control to prevent monthly cycles as managing a bloody mess was quite difficult.
It may be slightly affected if parts of the brain with certain hormones is affected.
Huh, not something you’d often think about.. comments are interesting to read, good on the nurses for explaining
Yes, coma patients will still menstruate and the medical staff will ensure that proper hygiene protocol is provided.
As others have mentioned there have been instances of SA regarding coma patients that have resulted in pregnancy.
Needless to say, the safety of a coma patient should be crucial (as it should be with all patients…but I digress).
No stupid questions, but a closer to stupid question: if someone in a coma isnβt eating solid foods, are they/how are they still pooping?
Yes
Yes! My friend was in a coma for 2 months and she got her period each month..
Terrible but yes.. as well as ppl with things like ms if they are young enough and unlucky to be very disabled
Worked as an RN in a neurotrauma ICU and the severely traumatic event (car accident, bad fall from high up, etc) often triggered the start of menstruation in younger female patients. Was pretty common.
