Hey everyone! So, I’m at a bit of a crossroads here. I’ve been working at a university for years, completed my PhD there, and was promised a high-level role post-PhD. But things took a bit of a turn when they offered me less than what I deserved and denied my request to work fully remote.
Now, I have a job offer that’s fully remote, less responsibility, and pays what I originally asked for. I’m planning on submitting my notice tomorrow, but I can’t help but worry about leaving them in a lurch.
Here’s my plan to make the transition smoother for everyone involved:
– Use PTO during my notice period to help with the financial implications
– Ensure my direct reports are taken care of before I leave
– Maybe even offer to help with the transition in a consulting capacity if needed
What do you guys think? Any other suggestions on how to navigate this situation gracefully and ensure a smooth exit for both parties? I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice 🤔💼 #CareerTransition #ExitStrategy

Congrats on the new job but my only question is is why give notice at all. Let them figure out on their own that you didn’t accept their offer.
Force a payout. It’s the only way to make them feel ramifications for what they do.
Take the other job and give yourself some time to coast a little bit. Honestly, you cannot feel guilty about leaving that job. Academia is no picnic, you might go back someday, but right now you need something different

I’m going to break this to you gently:
Even though you’ve been there 10 years, they didn’t want you for this role. move on.
Academia is a mess. I came to it as a second career from a career that prided itself on subordinate development. They cared that you were successful. Bosses were graded on how well their team did. So far, the only thing they hear is quitting. Hope you land on your feet.
Never understood why exceptional staff are not valued more and employers cheap out on you … really like to read their response to this.
Just make sure you don’t let anyone know where you’re going.

OP DO NOT give notice before PTO is gone. Most places with try to fuck you over. Use it up. Then put in notice
1. Did you use up all PTO?
If not. Use it all up.
2. Make sure you have a new job set up.
my notice if I was you. on the first day of the new job. at the new job. tell them you found a new job and you wont be coming on, (but do it 1 hour late)
Why give notice? Call or text and tell them you quit.
